The choice to pay attention, to invest in the experience we are having in the moment, is one of the most essential parts of the practice we do together. Shining the light of awareness gives us a view of what’s happening that we didn’t have before and allows us to be more skillful in our responses. Raise awareness to release attachment and reveal spaciousness, creativity, possibilities, healing.

Below are our playlists for the week – as well as the notes about the songs for which I adapted choreography. If you’d like to listen to them, you can find almost all the music on Spotify where you can listen for free! And in general, please let me know if you have any questions about any of the music we dance to!

And first, some announcements of things that are happening!

Share Your Word for 2019 … and Be Entered to Win a Nia Pendant
Every year, I choose a word as my focus. My word for 2019 is CLEAR. As part of embodying it, I am clearing my spaces … inside and out. I haven’t worn this this Nia pendant in a long time and I’d love to share it. I’d also love to make a piece of art that celebrates our 2019 words. So, in the comments below please write your word and your name (or you can email me at sjmnia@gmail.com), then I’ll make a piece of art with our words (no names)! I’ll enter everybody who gives me their word by Monday, January 21 and draw one for the pendant (if you want to have your word as part of the art but don’t want the pendant, just put an askerisk next to your name)!

Mindful Self-Compassion 8-Week Course with Laura DeVault & Anna Vanhoy
We live in a world full of environmental challenges, political upheaval, and divisive rhetoric. Our sense of well-being can get worn down, especially if it is dependent on our latest success or failure. Mindful self-compassion takes a different approach. When you turn toward your feelings of distress with compassion, you can limit self-criticism and offset its negative effects, enabling you to achieve your highest potential and a more fulfilled life. (You might even get a better night’s sleep.)
Every Monday from 1 – 4 PM for 8 weeks, starting January 21, 2019. $450 includes 8 classes, plus a half-day retreat on Sat., Feb. 23.
To Register, contact Maureen Otten, 434-220-4686 weekdays 9 – 5, or email Anna and Laura at info.mscdv@gmail.com. For more, go here. https://www.facebook.com/events/1927255664236835/

The process of putting an intention into practice — or changing any habit or pattern, for that matter — is a cycle of Yang/masculine/doing (Set Intention & Put Into Action) and Yin/feminine/allowing (Non-Identification & Compassion). Our humanness means that our minds will wander and we’ll lose our focus on our intention. It’s just what happens. The cycle of actively setting and embodying an intention and then gently and kindly bringing ourselves is where, as Sharon Salzberg reminds us, the magic happens.

Below are our playlists for the week. If you’d like to listen to them, you can find almost all the music on Spotify where you can listen for free! And in general, please let me know if you have any questions about any of the music we dance to!

Elizabeth Truslow 2015
This week we danced the rich relationship between the core and extremities, as well as the play of mind and body as we tune our awareness to that relationship. We also honored the passing of our friend and fellow Nia dancer, Elizabeth Truslow. Her kind radiance and bright, gentle spirit is a terrible loss. We will miss her tremendously.
Really, it all comes down to relationship. What we bring to our interactions with everyone and everything is all we can control. May you always bring what you want to bring.
Below are all the playlists for the week and you can also find them on Spotify https://www.spotify.com/us/ where you can listen to all the music for free! Follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen! No matter where you are, we can listen and dance together! Note that if you are using the Spotify app for mobile devices, the program inserts “recommended” music that is not on my original playlist. Also, Spotify doesn’t have all the music I have, so sometimes I’ll put up a different version of a song or skip it all together. Have fun with it.
A couple of things to know about:
• New Blog ~ A Thousand Beautiful Things http://1kbeautifulthings.com/ ~ I’m going to be traveling for about half the summer, so I’m writing a separate blog for photographs (phone camera only!), words, and essays about gratitude, beauty, mindfulness and whatever I discover on my adventures! Please join me there!
SAVE THE DATE: DANCE. SIT. WRITE. DAY SHOP HAPPENS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2015 ~ Mark your calendar for the next opportunity to spend the day playing in the intersection of movement, meditation and creativity! More details to come this summer (you can follow along at https://www.facebook.com/events/443642725810963/ ) Let me know if you have questions (sjmnia@gmail.com)

In Blackwater Woods by Mary Oliver

Look, the trees
are turning
their own bodies
into pillars

of light,
are giving off the rich
fragrance of cinnamon
and fulfillment,

the long tapers
of cattails
are bursting and floating away over
the blue shoulders

of the ponds,
and every pond,
no matter what its
name is, is

nameless now.
Every year
everything
I have ever learned

in my lifetime
leads back to this: the fires
and the black river of loss
whose other side

is salvation,
whose meaning
none of us will ever know.
To live in this world

you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.

core is to extremities as... SAT testRemember logic analogies on standardized tests? Those equation-y things that read:

A : B :: C : D (or in English: A is to B as C is to D).

Remember those? The whole testing thing made me crazy. I would begin those tests with an anxious heart and knitted eyebrows and end in a hyperventilating heap. Logic analogies were simply a microcosm of the tests.

I’d start out okay…

wave : crest : : _________ : peak
a. water
b. top
c. moving
d. mountain (this one, definitely)

And then get into more tricky territory…

falling : gravitation : : collapse : __________
a. balloon
b. electricity
c. pressure (um, yeah, this one)
d. destruction

And then I’d start getting a scrambly brain…

extort : obtain ::
a. pilfer : steal (this one…or wait is it??)
b. plagiarize : borrow (maybe this…)
c. explode : ignite
d. purify : strain
e. consider : appeal

And then the wimpering would begin…

equanimity : harried ::
a. celebrity : infamous
b. erudition : urbane
c. moderation : dissolute (I think it’s this but I’m not exactly…ahhh!)
d. distinction : singular
e. intuition : logical

The whole process left me quivering. I’m grateful beyond measure that it is unlikely that I will EVER have to take a standardized test again.

But lately, logic analogies have piqued my curiosity. Logic analogies are really all about relationships between thing and relationships interest me a lot.

So here are a couple of logic analogies Frank and I came up with:

Tree trunk : leaves :: torso : hands

Right? The trunk holds the space for the leaves to reach and grow and move, just like the torso stabilizes so the arms can reach out with more freedom. For most of us, most of the time, this is the way we use the core and extremities. But what about this one:

Ends of a Slinky : middle of the slinky :: feet : core

Can you see how this is also true? The ends of a Slinky ground down so the middle can move – and we can do that in the body, too. Think of Downward Facing Dog or Wheel Pose (photos below) in yoga: in both cases, the extremities stabilize to allow for more movement in the spine and core.

core is to extremities as... downward dogcore is to extremities as... wheel pose

So what is the relationship between the extremities and the core of the body? What is the logic that connects the core to the arms & legs? In the introduction of his routine SkyDancing, Carlos AyaRosas invites us to cultivate a sensory relationship between these different physical structures: the three body weights of pelvis, chest & head and the arms & legs. Like any long-standing relationship, it is a rich and varied one in which the players can change roles with ease. Through movement, we can play with variations on this complex relationship in our own bodies.

Logic analogies show just a few of the ways the relationship can manifest …

Extremities : Core :: Mobility : Stability
Extremities : Core :: Stability : Mobility
Extremities : Core :: Freedom : Foundation
Extremities : Core :: Foundation : Freedom
Extremities : Core :: Agility : Strength
Extremities : Core :: Strength : Agility
Extremities : Core :: Flexibility : Strength
Extremities : Core :: Strength : Flexibility

There are as many variations on this relationship as there are bodies. Unlike the cursed SAT, there are no wrong answers. I’d love to hear how you experience it in yours (add them in the comments below or at the Focus Pocus Facebook page. Your participation is a gift to everyBody) !

socks on socks off wax on wax offIn Karate Kid, Daniel learned “Wax on. Wax off.” This week we learned “Socks on. Socks off.” How does the movement we do in the studio flow out into our everyday movement and how does our daily movement flow back to the practice? I invite you to dissolve the walls of the studio and play with embodying Principle 5 of the Nia Technique: Dance Through Life.

EnJOY, EveryBody!

Dance on. Shine on.

NIA TRAINER, JULIE WYLIE, COMING TO CHARLOTTESVILLE

We’re excited to support a weekend of classes and workshops with Nia Trainer, Julie Wylie, July 18-20 and then a Nia White Belt training September 16-22. Events will include lots of things for everyBODY as well as for belts wanting to reconnect to the principles and practices. More info coming soon. For now, mark your calendar!

THIS WEEKEND! TWO SPECIAL NIA EVENTS AT ACAC MIDLOTHIAN (if you’re a member in Cville, you’re a member there)

Join Britta von Tagen, international Nia teacher and Nia trainer, for a Heart of Nia Playshop. This playshop will help you tap into your own deep and personal connection to Nia by developing your sensitivity as a Sacred Athlete.
Sunday, May 25, Midlothian ACAC 12-3p.m.
$35 ACAC member pre-pay ($45 at the door, space permitting)
$45 Non-member pre-pay ($55 at the door, space permitting)

Jason Alan Griffin, First Degree Black Belt, is stopping in Richmond for his cross country Nia tour. This is a one of a kind opportunity to experience Jason’s style of Nia as we sweat to some remixed James Bond theme songs and other classic Shirley Bassey tunes.
Monday, May 26 at the Midlothian ACAC. 8:15 a.m.
The class is FREE for ACAC members and $12 for non-members.
