Connection without comparison requires practice. Our brains are design to rate and rank, compare and compete, so choosing presence over all of that takes focus. There are sensations associated with connection with comparison and without. Learning to recognize these patterns are key to making skillful choices.

Today’s self-guided ajna* practice focuses on the physical sensations around connection without forcing, over-thinking or over-efforting. In this short video, I guide three simple stretches (that happen to be excellent for anyone who is sitting a lot ~ hint: that’s most of us!) with an approach to connecting to the body with presence instead of thinking about how it is supposed to be.

An Approach to Connecting with Presence
• Use 40-60% effort. Pushing to 100% leaves no room for feeling and adjustment. Connection with presence doesn’t force.
• Receive support. Feel the ground. Let yourself soften into whatever is holding you up (whether its a chair, the floor, the earth…or a person).
• Respond to what’s happening. Feel the subtleties of what is happening as you connect. Notice the micro-shifts and respond. What’s really needed?
This approach is a loop so keep going back to that less-than-100% effort, receive support and respond from there. You use this approach with any stretch, movement, or activity (physical or not). Find the video here.
