We all get lots of practice at comparing and rating ourselves to each other but how do we practice connecting with presence? Today’s super-simple restorative yoga series uses minimal props and any part of it can be done to help get us out of our think-y, comparing heads and into our wise, compassionate bodies.

I use variations on these poses when I’ve been on screens for a long time, I’m over-thinking, or I feel rattled or upset. Find the video here.

Props for the Practice:
~ carpet ~ blanket ~ yoga mat (or all three)
~ 2 big, thick bath towels
~ 1 bath mat or another towel
~ tea or water (optional)

I’m experimenting with fewer, easier-to-gather props and I’d love to hear what you think! What do you have in your house and what feels good in your body? Please leave a comment below!

Thinking is part of being human. It’s what our brains are designed to do. And sometimes, the mind gets so crowded and snarled with thoughts that it’s impossible to see anything BUT the thinking. Body~mind practices that invite us to drop into sensation and the present moment can give us some space between us and all the thinking.

Today’s Moon River Restorative Yoga series focuses on allowing space between us and our thoughts…and in the joints of ankles, low back, and neck. Find the video here.

Props for the Practice:
• carpet ~ blanket ~ yoga mat (or all three!) on the floor
• 2 bath towels
• 2 firm pillows
• 1 blanket
• eye covering (optional)
• tea or water (optional)

It’s a strange endeavor: to stay connected when we are apart. This week, I was struck by a something that yoga teacher Jillian Pransky offered on her blog:

Meditation Teacher, Ethan Nichtern shared on Instagram, “Meditation is one of the best ways to make sure that you are not socially distancing from yourself.”

He elaborated, “‘…social distancing’ is a problematic term. We should be physically distancing very rigorously, but the social distance might imply dissociation and disconnection, especially in regards to oneself. Keep your body away from others, but try to stay connected, especially to yourself.”

Meditation, walks in the woods and restorative yoga are all ways that I am not socially distancing from myself. Today’s Dancing Water Daily is a short, simple restorative series that requires only a few props from around the house and a willingness to drop into your own skin. Find the video here.

Props for the Practice:
• carpet ~ yoga mat ~ blanket
• 2 firm pillows
• 2 bath towels
• eye covering that can also double as a small pillow (like a hand towel)
• tea or water

May this practice help your body, mind, and heart unwind and stay connected.

“That was just what I needed.”

Do you know that feeling? Sometimes I can’t articulate it but when it’s presented, yes, that’s was it. When it happens, it’s like a blessing.

Today’s Nourishing Movement is a short restorative yoga practice in listening to your body and yourself and responding. Using a few props from around the house for support, this simple practice gives us a chance to feel what is really needed. Keep asking the question, listening and responding with compassionate curiosity. Find the video here.

Props for the Practice:
• 3 firm pillows
• 1 small blanket
• 1 large blanket for extra softness on the floor (optional)
• 2 bath towels
• eye covering (optional)
• tea or water

What do you need? The more we practice with ourselves, the more intuitive and wise we can be with others.

Calm is our natural state. Really? If that’s true, then mine is usually covered up in busyness, distraction, and anxiety. When I slow myself down, though, I can find a corner of calm somewhere.

Today’s Dancing Water Daily practice is a restorative yoga sequence designed to help find even a little sliver of calm to spend a little time with and maybe let spread out in the body and beyond. Find the video here.

Master Relaxation Teacher Phoenix the Cat makes several guest appearances in this simple series of nervous system calmers and a variation on one of my favorite poses ever. This is a practice for anyBODY that is about deep, supported relaxation using a few things from around the house.

Here’s what you’ll need:
– carpet * yoga mat * blanket under you
– a little wall space
– 2 firm pillows
– 2 bath towels
– 1 soft blanket
– eye covering (optional)
– cat (optional)
– tea or water (optional)

If you’d like some more delicious restorative, I invite you to enjoy this recording of my teacher, Shandoah Goldman’s April 16 Restorative Class that I loved this week. You can find it here.

You are a breathing thing, a memory to someone, a home to a life” — Niyyirah Waheed

How can you cultivate calm for yourself and everyone around you?

How was this week for you? I felt like I found a rhythm in the strangeness and was functioning relatively smoothly. And then I slowed down. I took a restorative yoga class with my teacher, Shandoah Goldman. Out of nowhere at the end of the practice, after I’d unwound everything I was holding together, I wept a wave of sadness and anxiety.

This is why both movement and stillness are essential for us now more than ever. We need to let the energy move around and shake up and through. And we need it all to settle down and out.

Today’s Moon River Restorative practice invites presence with everything that’s rolling through us all the time ~ even if we don’t notice it. All you need is a few props from around the house and a willingness to show up with openess, tenderness and compassion. Please join me. You’ll find the video here.

Here’s what you’ll need:
• a yoga mat, blanket or carpeted floor
• two bath towels
• two firm pillows
• a small blanket
• an eye covering
• a cup of decaffeinated tea (or water!)

Especially if you think “I don’t have time for this” or “I don’t need this, I’m fine,” I hope you’ll see that as an invitation in.

Resilience is a balance of strength and elasticity. Imagine a solid wood bocce ball. Super strong. Drop it on the floor, though, and it doesn’t bounce. Imagine a ball of wet tissue. Super soft. Drop it on the floor and it doesn’t bounce…at all. Now imagine a pink rubber ball. Super strong. Super soft. Drop it on a hard floor and it bounces right back into your palm.

Your ability to bounce back from hard stuff is directly related to your strength AND your softness. Restorative yoga is about softening into the tight, held, hard places. Today, the Dancing Water Daily practice is a simple, deeply nourishing restorative yoga practice using props you have at home. You can find the video here.

Here’s what you’ll need:
• a yoga mat, blanket or carpeted floor
• two bath towels
• two firm pillows
• a small blanket
• a cup of decaffeinated tea (or water!)

Be a rubber ball. The more you can soften and let go, the more you can bounce.
