be a peacemaker for 090216

So many thanks to Buck Mountain Episcopal Health & Wellness Ministry for hosting our special class on being a peacemaker in times of hatred. And thanks to all who came out to embody peace!

Below is the playlist from the evening but first, I promised to include links to the resources I referred to and the practices we did together.

Patricia Pearce’s article offered three ways of being a peacemaker
1. Stand in Solidarity with Those Under Attack
2. Love the Person Consumed by Hatred
3. Heal Your Own Mind
You can read her full excellent article here.

The practice of Tonglen is one we can do anytime we are faced with hatred, violence, or suffering of any kind. Imagine suffering as thick, hot, black sticky tar. Inhale and breathe in the black tar of suffering deep into your heart. Exhale, and let it explode and be burned away in the heat of the love and compassion in your heart. Inhale black suffering, exhale an explosion of loving white light.

This is an excellent talk on standing in solidarity with those who need our support and standing with our highest values in times of trouble: The Burning Church talk by Greg Thompson

If you have other resources on this topic, I would love to share them. Please feel free to contribute them to the Focus Pocus facebook page or email them to me at sjmnia@gmail.com. Thank you to all who create peace on earth by first taking the courageous step to create peace within.

Dance on. Shine on.

*** PLAYLIST NOTE: My playlists can also be found on Spotify https://www.spotify.com/us/ by following “susanmcculley” (no space) and look for Public Playlists. Sometimes music is not available on Spotify so I may replace with another version or skip songs — and sadly, that is definitely the case for this playlist. I highly recommend the 1 Giant Leap albums which use music from artists from around the world who never actually meet. ***

PROJECT MICHAEL FRANTI TO CHARLOTTESVILLE: A COMMUNITY PROJECT OF GRATITUDE AND INVITATION

Rebecca has begun putting the 75 flags we have created into a long (it looks like more than 20 yard) strand of love. We’ll document it with photos and video, and maybe find a way to film us all dancing to one of his songs!

NIA TRAINER, JULIE WYLIE, COMING TO CHARLOTTESVILLE

We’re excited to support a weekend of classes and workshops with Nia Trainer, Julie Wylie now scheduled for September and a Nia White Belt early in 2015. Events will include lots of things for everyBODY as well as for belts wanting to reconnect to the principles and practices. More info coming soon.

Snow Walk on Rivanna 008From MLK Day to snow (??) days to some freezing temperatures (even for this New-Englander-Who-Was-Recently-In-Minnesota) it’s been quite a week. The power of acts of love – both to others and our very own selves – is what each of us can do to create positive change in the world. Thank you for setting that intention with me.

Yesterday, I did some Nia with a gaggle of 2nd graders at Kacie-Linn Engle’s art studio. Law, did we have some fun dancing and making art together! I noticed that even for these tender 8- and 9-year-olds, saying positive things about themselves and their own work was challenging. May we all do our best to act and speak with love…and to encourage self-love and self-support in our children.

Here are a couple of links I thought y’all would enjoy this week:

Sixteen years ago tomorrow, I met (and pretty much instantly fell in love with) my husband, Frank. From that day, we’ve talked about travelling, really travelling, and exploring the world. When we met, Frank’s two children were 7 and 3. Now they’re 23 and 19 and the younger just started at UVA. A week from today, my love and I will be flying to Costa Rica for the month of February. I hardly know what to think of this long-hoped-for adventure. I’ll share more about that next week. But for now, know that all my classes will be covered by our extraordinary acac Nia team starting on Thursday, Jan 30:
Thursdays 9am ~ Adrienne
Mondays 1045am ~ Mary Linn
Tuesdays 9am ~ Kayde
Wednesdays 1055am ~ Anne
Huge thanks to my colleagues for making this exciting journey possible.

I’m not gone yet, though, my friends. I’ll be teaching Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week! Hope to see you either on the blog or on the dancefloor!

Dance on. Shine on.

mlk w quote 2In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., we’ve been focusing on one of his famous quotes: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.  Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”  By focusing on coming from a place of love, toward ourselves (even when we treat ourselves poorly) and the people around us (even when they treat us poorly), we can change everything – including and perhaps most importantly, how we feel.

Open your vision.  Soften your eyes.  Open your hands.  Touch with sensitivity and strength.  Remember Rumi:  “The very center of your heart is where life begins. The most beautiful place on earth.”  Rock on.

Love,

Susan
