Today, more on the medicine for this moment. I’ve been contemplating the six Quarantine Questions that I found on the Engine2 Instagram feed:

Daily Quarantine Questions:
1. What am I grateful for today?
2. Who am I checking in on or connecting with today?
3. What expectations of “normal” am I letting go of today?
4. How am I getting outside today?
5. How am I moving my body today?
6. What beauty am I either creating, cultivating or inviting in today?

This class continues with the physical anchors of moving and sensing our heads, hearts, hands and heels. The intent is to use these touch points in the body to ground, relax and move in different ways. As always, it’s about paying attention: the investment in yourself.

Today’s class is with all new, copyright-legal music (see the schedule for weekly classes below) and is available for practice here. Subscribe to my YouTube Channel, leave a friendly comment, and hit Notifications so you know when I post new classes! And here’s today’s playlist:

I continue to work on all aspects of offering online classes (new music! better camera possibilities! a cordless mic! Fingers crossed!). Another option for you might be NiaTV which is an online service offering 30 days free access to Nia TV’s at-home dance workouts, podcasts, meditations, and exclusive livestream.
• To register, click here and start your free trial today.
• Please note: you will need to cancel your Nia TV account within 30 days to avoid being charged after the 30-day trial period.

UPDATED PRACTICES THIS WEEK
In order to solve the music copyright issues on YouTube, to address the issues with internet streaming and the fact that not everybody is on Facebook (and in the interest of simplicity!), at 9am every day I will post a recorded practice. This will allow people to access classes whenever they can do them, whether they are Facebookers or not and will be less stressful to produce.

You can help to increase the interactivity and assure me that you are out there! PLEASE DO:
• leave comments on the Facebook videos and share them with friends
• subscribe to my YouTube channel (it’s FREE, of course), like, comment and share them
• subscribe, comment and share these blog posts
• email me at sjmnia@gmail.com with ideas and suggestions for what would be of the most help and support in these days

Today we continue to explore finding our own medicine for these strange days. In my sister’s house, she and her family are doing the 5 Hs every day:

• Head. Read a book, do school work, learn something (not news related)
• Heart. Exercise! Move in some way that you love and do some of it outside
• Hands. Make something! Craft, drawing, play music, make someone a card, make a nourishing meal
• Household. Do something to contribute to the wellness of the home, clean something, put things away, fold some laundry, empty the dishwasher
• Help. Send an email, text, or call someone over 65 or someone who is vulnerable in some way

I’ve adopted this approach and it’s helping me so much. When I start feeling sludgy or down, I scan the list and see which H I haven’t done yet. It shifts things almost immediately. How are you creating a new normal in these surreal times?

We gathered this morning on my YouTube Channel to bring together our sometimes scattered body and mind. In these days of uncertainty, fear can grab us and carry us to all kinds of terrifying places.

The art above is from a call this week with a tribe of whole-food plant-based friends. On it, we chatted about strengthening our immune systems, not just with what we eat but with what we think.

One genius participant commented:

Fear [is] your mind in the future and body in the present. The body doesn’t like that …imbalance, so it releases stress chemicals trying to get back ‘in balance’ …with mind and body working together to deal with the present time or situation.
– from Eat To Live Immunity School – 3/16/20 (you can join us here!)

Every choice, every decision you ever make comes from one of two places: fear or love. Fear is when your mind is in the future. Love is when body and mind are both present.

This is the parable that I read today:

“Once there was a young warrior. Her teacher told her that she had to do battle with fear. She didn’t want to do that. It seemed too aggressive; it was scary; it seemed unfriendly. But the teacher said she had to do it and gave her the instructions for the battle.
The day arrived. The student warrior stood on one side, and fear stood on the other. The warrior was feeling very small, and fear was looking big and wrathful. They both had their weapons.
The young warrior roused herself and went toward fear, prostrated three times, and asked, “May I have permission to go into battle with you?” Fear said, “Thank you for showing me so much respect that you ask permission.”
Then the young warrior said, “How can I defeat you?” Fear replied, “My weapons are that I talk fast, and I get very close to your face. Then you get completely unnerved, and you do whatever I say. If you don’t do what I tell you, I have no power. You can listen to me, and you can have respect for me. You can even be convinced by me. But if you don’t do what I say, I have no power.” In that way, the student warrior learned how to defeat fear. ”

I am working hard on the technical side of offering online classes and a cordless mic is on its way soon! Yay! Another option for you might be NiaTV which is an online service offering 30 days free access to Nia TV’s at-home dance workouts, podcasts, meditations, and exclusive livestream.

• Please note: you will need to cancel your Nia TV account within 30 days to avoid being charged after the 30-day trial period.

When we are in scary times, sometimes it’s impossible to even KNOW what might be helpful or supportive. I’d love to hear what would be most helpful to you and if you just don’t know, breathe, it’s totally fine. I’ll just keep experimenting!

TOMORROW, Thursday, March 19, 2020, 11am
Please join me on my YouTube Channel for a special class blending guided and unguided movement with the intent of breaking habitual patterns and connecting to your own unique way of moving. Since we moved to Dancing Water nearly a year ago, I’ve been teaching a class at The Studio on most every Thursday at 11am. I love that time and space more than I can say. In honor of the group who comes out to the studio in the trees by the river, we’ll share a Dharma Dance experience. Dharma Dance is a practice that I created about 10 years ago and it’s one have been wanting to return to. It begin with a few songs with choreography and form that are designed to unstick long-held habits. Then we’ll move in our own way for the second half of the experience (to some crazy-good music, y’all). I’m excited to return to this healing practice. I hope you’ll join me. Please subscribe to my Channel and ask for notifications, leave a comment and tell a friend! I’ll also leave a link on the Focus Pocus Page here. See you tomorrow at 11am!

The body can be nowhere but the present. And when body and mind are together, fear has no dominion.
Please stay in touch.
Until soon, my friends!

Dancing Water Live: Fear, Love & Presence
Wednesday, March 18, 2020, 11am

We Are All Connected 7:07 Magic Sound Fabric
Sun Is Shining (Out Of Sight Remix) 7:30 ReUnited
Lovers House 4:49 City Reverb
One World, One People 4:43 Xcultures
Take Me to the River 6:00 Talking Heads
Unwritten 4:19 Natasha Bedingfield
Shine 4:12 Joshua
Warm Sound 5:31 Zero 7
100 Billions Stars 5:10 Lux

Today we were live from my YouTube Channel and moved with the intention of noticing the details: in ankles and wrists, of inside and outside, of fear and love, of isolation and connection, all of it.

And this is the poem I read at the end of class:

Lockdown by Brother Richard Hendrick from Ireland

Yes there is fear.
Yes there is isolation.
Yes there is panic buying.
Yes there is sickness.
Yes there is even death.
But,
They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise
You can hear the birds again.
They say that after just a few weeks of quiet
The sky is no longer thick with fumes
But blue and grey and clear.
They say that in the streets of Assisi
People are singing to each other
across the empty squares,
keeping their windows open
so that those who are alone
may hear the sounds of family around them.
They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland
Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound.
Today a young woman I know
is busy spreading fliers with her number
through the neighbourhood
So that the elders may have someone to call on.
Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples
are preparing to welcome
and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary
All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting
All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a
new way
All over the world people are waking up to a new reality
To how big we really are.
To how little control we really have.
To what really matters.
To Love.

So we pray and we remember that
Yes there is fear.
But there does not have to be hate.
Yes there is isolation.
But there does not have to be loneliness.
Yes there is panic buying.
But there does not have to be meanness.
Yes there is sickness.
But there does not have to be disease of the soul
Yes there is even death.
But there can always be a rebirth of love.
Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now.
Today, breathe.
Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic
The birds are singing again
The sky is clearing,
Spring is coming,
And we are always encompassed by Love.
Open the windows of your soul
And though you may not be able
to touch across the empty square,
Sing.

Our online gatherings for movement, connection, and healing continued today – as did the technical bobbling! We focused on noticing the details and wonder of spring, our bodies and sensation. Thanks to those who stuck it out with me (and if you had trouble with the live feed, you might find the recorded video sounds better). My roadie, Frank (who was a rock star today) and I are continuing to play with how to make this work better!

Please find the playlist is below. And you can find the video for today’s class here.

Given my videos’ low production value and my wobbly technical skill, however, a better option for you might be NiaTV which is an online service offering 30 days free access to Nia TV’s at-home dance workouts, podcasts, meditations, and exclusive livestream.

When we are in difficult circumstances, sometimes it’s impossible to even KNOW what might be helpful or supportive. If you DO have ideas about what would feel good in these uncertain days, please let me know. In particular, I’m interested to know:
• if you would you rather shorter or longer classes?
• what time of day would be great?
• if you would you like a restorative yoga practice?
• guided relaxation/meditation?
• guided developmental movement (mainly on the floor)?
I’d love to hear what would be most helpful to you and if you just don’t know, don’t worry. I’ll just keep playing around!

Tuesday, March 17, 2020, 4pm
Please join me on the Focus Pocus Facebook Page for another nourishing movement class at 4pm focused on noticing details. I’ll pull music from the Firedance routine since it *is* St. Patrick’s Day and everything. I will either use Facebook Live OR I may provide a link to YouTube. We’ll see what my roadie and I figure out. Either way, you will find it on the Focus Pocus Page here.

These days are surreal and disorienting. Movement and connection is one way to keep ourselves grounded.
Please stay in touch.
Until soon, my friends!

Yesterday we gathered for nourishing movement (after a bit of tech melt-down due, I’m almost completely certain, to user error) that focused on connecting in and out. Thank you to those who came out and braved this new territory with me. I hope it was helpful and look forward to hearing about your experience.

Offering these classes feels important and like not enough, essential and feckless at the same time. But since I have decided not to teach any in-person classes for at least two weeks, I can’t for the life of me think of anything else to do. I know the power of movement and connection, so I want to use the technology we have to support ourselves and each other in these strange, scary, uncertain times.

Given my low production value and technical skill, however, a better option for you might be NiaTV which is an online service offering 30 days free access to Nia TV’s at-home dance workouts, podcasts, meditations, and exclusive livestream.

• Please note: you will need to cancel your Nia TV account within 30 days to avoid being charged after the 30-day trial period.

From yesterday’s class, here is the poem I read (thanks to my Dad and my friend Marion for sharing it!)

Pandemic by Lynn Ungar

What if you thought of it
As the Jews consider the Sabbath –
The most sacred of times?
Cease from travel.
Cease from buying and selling.
Give up, just for now,
on trying to make the world
different than it is.
Sing. Pray. Touch only those
to whom you commit your life.
Center down.

And when your body has become still,
Reach out with your heart.
Know that we are connected
In ways that are terrifying and beautiful.
(You could hardly deny that now.)

Know that our lives
are in one another’s hands.
(Surely, that has come clear.)
Do not reach out your hand.
Reach out with your heart.
Reach out with your words.
Reach out all the tendrils
Of compassion that move, invisibly,
where we cannot touch.

Promise this world your love –
For better or for worse,
in sickness and in health,
so long as we all shall live.

Please find the playlist is below. (Special thanks to Amy for turning me on to the song Baiana!) And you can find the video for today’s class here.

As I figure things out (today, I’m tackling YouTube!), I would be grateful if you commented or emailed me with any ideas, suggestions, feedback and in general about how I can make it work better for you (anybody know anything about using OBS streaming software, Facebook Live or YouTube Live?). Some questions I’d love to hear about:
• what length of class would work best?
• any time of day that would be preferable?
• how about a restorative yoga practice?
• guided relaxation/meditation?
• guided developmental movement (mainly on the floor)?
I’d love to hear what would be most helpful to you.

TODAY, Monday, March 16, 2020, 11am on Facebook Live
Please join me on the Focus Pocus Facebook Page for a live nourishing movement class at 11am. I’ll be there a little early to make sure everything is working (ha! we’ll see how that goes} and chat with y’all and we’ll start class at 11am.

I look forward to hearing from you about what would help you most through these turbulent and uncertain times.

Please stay in touch.
Until soon, my friends!

dear Friends ~

These are fast-changing, deeply disorienting days. In the midst of turmoil, it can be challenging to know what to do. Are you feeling that, too?

This very week marks the 20th anniversary of my career as a movement educator. I have dedicated my professional life to creative connection and the practice of presence in body, mind and heart. I believe that this connection and presence is necessary for living a full human life, especially when times are difficult. It is with reluctance and sadness then that I have decided not to teach in-person classes at least for the next two weeks. But this feels like the best decision and in alignment with what we know now about this fast-moving virus. At the end of March, I will reassess the situation and determine how best to proceed.

So here we are. In hard times. And “hard times require furious dancing.” So while the current circumstances require us to stay separated, current technology allows us to be together. And THAT is what I am all about, my friends.

In the coming weeks, I will offer online classes via Facebook Live (I’m working on YouTube, too). I’m figuring it out as I go along and absolutely don’t know what I’m doing, but come jump in with me! This afternoon, after some bobbling around, I taught a 30-minute class to see how it might work. You can check it out here.

The playlist is below and I would be grateful if you commented or emailed me with any ideas, suggestions, feedback and in general about how I can make it work better for you (anybody know anything about using OBS streaming software, Facebook Live or YouTube Live? what length of class would work best? any time of day that would be preferable?). How I can be of service even while we are apart?

Tomorrow, Sunday, March 15, 2020 from approximately 3-4pm Eastern time I will teach another class on Facebook Live at the Focus Pocus Facebook page. (You will also be able to access the class later if that time doesn’t work for you.) Please join me and people from all over for some flowing, fabulous, furious dancing! I look forward to hearing from you about what would help you most through these turbulent and uncertain times.

Please stay in touch.
Until soon, my friends!
Love
