Our focus this week was on distinguishing between tension and tone, unconscious and conscious, habit and choice. As the Joseph Campbell model of the self indicates, we can use our practice to bring more of our experience “above the line” into awareness.

Since it was Valentine’s Day, we also danced the One Billion Rising 2019 playlist on both Tuesday night and Thursday morning. Bringing social patterns and “habits” into awareness, we rise and stand and dance for change, It is another way we can bring more of the world “above the line.”

Below are our playlists for the week. If you’d like to listen to them, you can find almost all the music on Spotify where you can listen for free! As always, please let me know if you have any questions about any of the music we dance to!

And friends, I am always ALWAYS looking for new music. Do you have a song that you love to move to or that moves you? I’d love to know what it is! Please respond in the comments below or email me at sjmnia@gmail.com!

Before the playlists, some announcements of things that are happening!

Celebration of Mary Oliver ~ Focus Next Week
On January 17, 2019, Mary Oliver died. She was one of my favorite poets and her words have had a powerful impact on me and my work. Next week, we will use as our focus two particularly powerful poems. One of the gifts of her death is that I’ve been introduced to poems I either had forgotten or didn’t know. If you have a favorite Mary Oliver poem, please share it either in the comments below or send it to me via email at sjmnia@gmail.com. I may work them into class somehow or … something. Looking forward to celebrating her deeply insightful view of the world.

“Knowledge is only a rumor until it is in the muscle.” – Papua New Guinea Proverb
In times of uncertainty, our first reaction can be to “figure this out.” It is a common approach to go straight to our minds to think our way out of a difficult situation. And nothing will shift, we won’t change a thing until we feel it in our bones, until we embody the change we want to see.
Space limited to 25 participants ~ Please RSVP to Susan at sjmnia@gmail.com
Suggested donation $20-25 and/or specific items of need by the families (more info on this to come)

As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.

obr-2o17

The first time we danced it was in 2013.

My friend Mimi Steele told me about One Billion Rising: the movement to stop violence and exploitation of women around the world. One in three women will be beaten or raped in their life – that’s one billion people. The idea was to get one billion people dancing on the planet on February 14.

I was down with it then and I am even more now.

Our current version of OBR* is a mighty playlist full of poetry and power. We hope you can join us in person*, but if you can’t, we’ll post it so you can dance it wherever you are.

Today on the blog, I revisit my original posts from 2013. They are even more relevant now.

From One Billion Rising ~ The Cause, February 10, 2013:

Sometimes, I have moments when I realize how extraordinarily lucky – and, at times, naive – I really am. I had one of those moments this week:  two friends and I were in my kitchen.  I was telling them about the One Billion Rising campaign to raise awareness and inspire action to end violence against women around the world.  I told them the chilling statistic:  one out of three women in their lifetime will be beaten or raped.  “It’s appalling,” I said, “and in our community of wealth, education, and privilege that statistic must be much lower so it must mean that it is higher in other communities!”  They both looked at me steadily.  Unbeknownst to me, both of them had been victims of domestic violence.  Right there at my kitchen table the statistic wasn’t 1 in 3, it was 2 in 3.

Make no mistake.  Violence against women happens everywhere, not just in 3rd world countries and impoverished neighborhoods.  Make no assumption.  Laws don’t always protect:  marital rape is legal in dozens of countries and condoned in far more.  Make it perfectly clear.  Rape and domestic violence happens in every socio-economic stratum, every race, every culture.

[You can read the whole post here.]

From One Billion Rising ~ The Practice, February 11, 2013:

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” ~ Anais Nin

The root of the word “courage” is “coeur” — French for heart. The heart of strength is courage and the center of courage is heart.  Dictionary.com’s definition notwithstanding, I believe that courage does not mean fearlessness. Courage is the willingness to persevere despite threat, danger or fear.  And that willingness takes heart.

For me, my practice is a reminder that my life, however blessed, is not isolated from those who are suffering. Interconnection is The Body’s Way and it is dharma:  the way things are. The One Billion Rising routine is an invitation to sense the interconnections in our bodies, to feel the strengthening of our hearts and to engage our courage to face what is wrong.

[You can read the whole post here.]

This year, more than ever: One Billion Rising.

The focus of the practice of Nia (and yoga and meditation and any other somatic practice) is to direct attention in order to feel. In Nia, we train, condition and heal the body, mind and emotions but none of those things will happen unless we are willing to feel. So thank you to everybody who showed up to dance and feel both in classes and remotely. It’s good to practice together.

All the playlists from the week are below or you can listen to them by going to Spotify! Dance for free at Spotify! Sign up, follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen!

And first the announce-y things:

little mouse

In Amy E. Robillard’s beautiful essay, Little Mouse, published in Full Grown People this week, I found the quote above that struck me with its connection to our focus this week. Finding strength in even “small and insignificant” places is at the heart of expanding our notion of what strength really is.

On Monday we danced to the powerful and energizing music of One Billion Rising and the rest of the week to a routine called Sense You All (more on that next week). You can find all playlists below and if you want to listen to them (and of course you do) just to go to Spotify! You can listen for free at Spotify! Sign up for free, follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen!

Below are the playlists for the week, but first here are some things you probably want to know about:

• Bluebeard: Identifying the Internal Predator, Mar 13, 2016, 2-5pm with Dianne and Mary Linn
Sunday afternoon workshop Using the powerful tools of an authentic teaching story, combined with guided movement with a master teacher Mary Linn, and time for discussion held in a sacred circle of women, we will work to recognize and understand the voice of our own internal predator. Cost: $65. For all the details, go here https://www.facebook.com/events/501637500008533/

• Firedance, Weds, Mar 16, 11am-1215pm acac Albemarle square and Thurs, March 17, 840-940am acac downtown
It’s time for the annual celebration of St. Patrick’s Day with the inspiring music of Riverdance! Two chances to dance it and of course, wear your green!

• Spring Nia Jam, Fri, Mar 18, 2016, 545-7pm, acac downtown
Spring is coming! Susan, Kate and Rachel will be teaching a special Nia jam focused on renewal. Come celebrate the sprouting wit us!

• Downtown Morning Nia on Tue, Apr 5 & Thu, Apr 7
ACAC is refinishing the floor in the Downtown Group Ex Studio during the first week of April. Weather permitting, I will teach on the rooftop deck on Tuesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 7, both days at 840-940am. Due to the somewhat rougher surface of the deck, we recommend wearing light shoes for these classes. Classes normally taught in Studio A will be held as usual during this time!

• dance. sit. write. draw. returns! Saturday, May 7, 830am-5pm
Living life as an artist isn’t a path for some rarified few, it’s our birthright. All of us. You might have lots of experience with dancing, meditating, writing, and drawing. Or you might have none. Spending the day blending these practices is a way of opening the channel of your artist self ~ giving it some oxygen and space no matter what your experience is. Join us for a delicious day. Go to susanmcculley.com/workshops for the details and to register. Or email sjmnia@gmail.com with questions.

As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.
Dance on. Shine on.
