The way I do anything is the way I do everything. If I can believe that this is true, then I can take the next step and know that by changing the way I do anything I can change the way I do everything. So how do you want to do everything? Make one small step toward that in anything you do.

Below are our playlists for the week. If you’d like to listen to the music, you can find almost all the songs on Spotify (you can listen for free)! As always, please let me know if you have any questions about any of the music we dance to!

And friends, I am always ALWAYS looking for new music. Do you have a song that you love to move to or that moves you? I’d love to know what it is! Please respond in the comments below or email me at sjmnia@gmail.com!

Before the playlists, here is the scoop on a whole slew of great things happening this summer!

Saturday July 27, 9-12noon – Moving & Writing with Light: Nourishing Body & Eyes with Susan & Rebecca
Susan & Rebecca offer a morning to expand your perspective on two things that everybody has: a body and a smartphone. The word “photography” means “writing with light.” A photo isn’t a copy of something— it’s a story written *by light*! And light is weaving stories all around us, all the time. Using the simple cameras that we all carry —the ones in our phones! — we’ll play with the stories of light around us and experience how changing our perspectives can change everything. Susan will weave movement and mindfulness into the morning to practice being with light & shadow. No experience in photography or movement needed, just bring a phone or tablet with a built-in camera and your body. If you like, from 12-2pm, bring a lunch and savor it on the porch, on the bench overlooking the river or on a rock in the middle of it. Bring water shoes and you could even sit in the water. $75. Register at http://www.susanmcculley.com/shop.

Join The Studio at Dancing Water Email List!
Get all the news about experiences at The Studio at Dancing Water, special offers and discounts and all the details about what’s happening! Please go here and note “Dancing Water” in the subject line (and any other note you’d like to leave)! Thank you for being part of nourishing movement in the trees by the river.

NOTE: It was brought to my attention that these words were not spoken by Chief Seattle. From Snopes.com “The words Chief Seattle has become famous for were written by Ted Perry, the screenwriter for Home, a 1972 film about ecology. They have since been widely quoted in books, on TV, and from the pulpit. A children’s book, Brother Eagle, Sister Sky: A Message From Chief Seattle, sold 280,000 within the first six months of its 1991 issue.” My feeling is that whoever said them, they are true and it’s bogus to attribute them to a Native American.

Connections and relationships are everywhere. As we move through our days, we are in connection with everything — our bodies, our movement, our thoughts, objects around us, other people, the environment — everything. The invitation is to open our awareness so that we recognize all these (inter) connections and making choices about what we want to bring to all of our relationships.

Speaking of relationships, I’m grateful for mine with Mary Linn. I love the chance to teach and create together and I’m grateful for her generosity in sharing her classes and her gifts. (We’ll be playing again in May so check that out below!)

You can find this week’s (inter)Connection & Relationship playlists below. If you’d like to listen to them, you can find almost all the music on Spotify where you can listen for free! Please let me know if you have any questions about any of the music we dance to!

strong back cracks 120915
What do you notice after a week of focusing on the mid-back/thoracic spine? I’m noticing more pliability in my chest and more strength in my back…and some soreness between my ribs! I’d love to hear how the practice is reverberating for you.

Below are all the playlists for the week. You can listen to all the playlists for free on Spotify https://www.spotify.com/us/ ! Sign up for free, follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen! No matter where you are, we can listen and dance together!

Here are some cool things you want to know about:

• Embracing Darkness: A Special Winter Class with Mary Linn & Susan ~ Friday, December 11, 6-7pm at Buck Mountain Episcopal Church Parish Hall – 4133 Earlysville Rd, Earlysville, VA 22936 (it’s the small white building just past the church with a YOGA sign out front).

As the dark edges closer and closer to our doors, we have a choice about how to approach this time of year. We can huddle and steel against it, we can glitter and holly jolly over it, or we can embrace it. Please join Mary Linn and Susan for a special class of movement and music that invites the whole-hearted embrace of the darkness that is essential to growth and life. Rich instrumental, gospel and live vocal music by our friend and fellow Nia dancer, Guy Lushin, underscores the focus on peaceful mindful presence we can choose to cultivate. Pay what you can (proceeds go to the Health & Wellness Ministry at Buck Mountain Episcopal). No experience or spiritual practice needed. All are welcome.

• Introduction to Ageless Grace at ACAC Downtown Studio A, Thursdays: December 17 and 31, 1:30-2:15

Ageless Grace is a fitness and wellness program designed for all ages and abilities. It combines physical activity, brain exercises, imagination and a sense of humor with music to stimulate a sense of pleasure and well-being! It is done seated, making it inviting for those with physical or cognitive limitations, balance concerns, or healing issues. There is no choreography to learn. Movements are easy, natural and organic and varied based on the music! Come experience how we can create lifelong comfort and ease physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Sheila Queen, Ageless Grace Certified Educator, will offer this introductory class December 17 and 31, 130-215pm at acac Downtown, Studio A. On December 17, members can bring a friend for free.

• dance. sit. write. draw. Saturday, January 23, 2016 – Registration now open!

We’re dancing, sitting and writing again and this time, we’re drawing, too! Join me for a day of exploration at the intersection of movement, stillness and creativity. Find all the information here and register at here on my new web site, http://www.susanmcculley.com

As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.
Dance on. Shine on.

Awake my soul 102815

This week we dove into breath and its power to move with and support us no matter what we’re doing. The practice of bringing awareness to breath, noticing its patterns and habits, can help us make choices to energize and relax us — even when things are stressful or uncomfortable. We also played with the beginnings of a new routine called Inspired that is starting to come together. Breathe in, Breathe out.

Below are all the playlists for the week. Did you know that you can listen to all the playlists for free on Spotify? Just sign up for free, follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen! No matter where you are, we can listen and dance together!
