After posting the focus of Fall Awake for the week, I stumbled across this Rebecca Solnit quote:

“The sleeping giant is one name for the public; when it wakes up, when we wake up, we are no longer only the public: we are civil society, the superpower whose nonviolent means are sometimes, for a shining moment, more powerful than violence, more powerful than regimes and armies. We write history with our feet and with our presence and our collective voice and vision. And yet, and of course, everything in the mainstream media suggests that popular resistance is ridiculous, pointless, or criminal, unless it is far away, was long ago, or, ideally, both. These are the forces that prefer the giant remain asleep.” ~ from Hope in the Darkness, p xxv

The playlists from the week are below. If you’d like to listen to them, you can find almost all the music on Spotify where you can listen for free! Put the music we dance together with other pieces that lift you up, calm you, and challenge you!

This week, I picked up Glennon Doyle Melton’s book, Love Warrior. It’s been on my “To Read” shelf for a while. I’ve been meaning to get to it. But here in the middle of a week focused on music, this is what I found on page 79…

“One night, several weeks into my sobriety, I lie down on my bed and my eyes wander to a pile of CDs in the corner of my bedroom. I stand up, walk over to them, and shuffle through the pile until I find the Indigo Girls. I hold them in my hand and wonder if I dare to let them sing to me. I open the case, slide the silver disk into the player, and press “play.” Then I lie back down and wait for the music to hurt too much. When they start singing, I begin to feel that familiar ache that music always brings. I hold my breath, but I quickly realize that my ache feels different than it used to. Music usually makes me feel left out and yearning, like I’m looking at a photograph of a party I wasn’t invited to. But now I feel drawn in, pulled closer, like the music is a bridge between these two women and me. I feel comforted . The Indigo Girls promise me that it’s okay to feel too much and know too little. They insist that my sadness is not new, it’s ancient. I listen for hours and every song makes me feel less alone and more a part of a universal, underground sisterhood. Gradually, I feel something like joy growing inside of me. This joy brings me to my feel and I start to dance. I dance in my bedroom, all by myself, with Amy and Emily. No one is watching me, which means I’m not performing. I’m just dancing. Whirling, whirling. For me.”

Later she says, “This is how I know I’m getting better: I become able to survive the beauty of music. I have accepted another one of life’s dangerous invitations: the invitation to feel. “

This is what our practice is about: learning to feel, learning to let in what is happening around us and in us. Music is indeed CPR for our souls.

All the playlists from the week are below. If you’d like to listen to them, you can find almost all the music on Spotify where you can listen for free! Put the music we dance to together with other pieces that lift you up, calm you and challenge you!

What if every time we gather together – in a meeting, at a meal, in a movement class – we think of it as a pot luck. Everybody bringing what they have to share with each other. Everybody appreciating what is on offer. And what if these pot lucks weren’t about showing off our fanciest recipes or mooching a free meal but rather genuinely and honestly bringing what we have to give today. What if these pot lucks were about showing up as we really are. Wouldn’t that be sometimes messy and uncomfortable … and delicious?

We will be dancing on concrete floors so please wear comfy shoes! I hope you’ll join me!

In the midst of playing with the power of intensity this week, I came across this short recording from ground-breaking mindfulness teacher, Jon Kabat-Zin. He explains how mindfulness and presence gives us the tools we need in stressful situations. It’s fine to not know what we’re doing, as long as we know where we are. Check it out here.

Remember that involuntary intensity will show up for each of us. By choosing voluntary intensity, we strengthen our ability to stay present when the wheels come off and things are unpleasant but also when pleasure and joy and love is strong!

First, the difficult news: it is with deep sadness that I share that our friend and long-time Nia dancer, Marie-Therese Pain died unexpectedly last week. We will miss her bright smile and generous, positive energy in classes. When it’s ready, her obituary will be here and a funeral mass will be held at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church (401 Alderman Road Charlottesville, VA 22903) at 11AM on Saturday, May 13th.

It’s been a week of wobbles. Which is a good thing…albeit often an uncomfortable one. Whether it’s in body, mind and emotions, it’s easy to run from awkward wobbly feelings but then we lose the chance to learn and grow and get stronger. So wobble on, my friends.

All the playlists from the week are below or you can listen to them by going to Spotify! Dance for free at Spotify! Sign up, follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen!

This week’s announcements and news:

• Interview on Home Grown on Sunday, May 7 at 10am
Listen in on Sunday, May 7, to an interview on Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art on 94.7 WPVC FM, Charlottesville. Susan will talk with hosts Leslie M. Scott-Jones and David Vaughn Straughn about movement, stillness and art…and dance.sit.create. It will also be on a Facebook Live Stream https://www.facebook.com/HomeGrownWPVC/

• Love Warrior: embody an evolving movement ~ Sunday, May 7, 3-430pm
a moving experience of activism in support of a local Syrian immigrant family
Join Susan to experience a new and evolving routine called Love Warrior. This is a movement experience designed for everyBody that allows us to experience the sensation of the change we want to see in the world. We can then translate that sensation directly into action. If you’ve not done this routine before, this is a great time to experience it. If you have, come do it with us again ~~ it’s always changing.
The way we treat the most vulnerable among us says the most about who we are. Enjoy an evening of movement, music, and community and at the same time offer support to a Syrian immigrant family. Home made Syrian baked treats will be available for sale after class!
Donate-What-You-Can ~ All proceeds from the event will go to our Syrian neighbors

Memorial Day Nia – Monday, May 29 from 11-12:15pm

dance.sit.create… RESCHEDULED Saturday, Jun 24, 2o17, 8:30am-5pm
Turns out that Mother’s Day weekend is a terrible time for a retreat. So, we will dance.sit.create…now on June 24. Come spend a delicious day playing at the sweet intersection of movement, stillness and art. We’ll explore the creative magic of the number 7 and the power of play for inspiration and restoration. No experience in anything is necessary. All you need is a willingness to see what happens and eat delicious, healthy meals. The retreat provides everything you need for an uplifting, rejuvenating day. Susan offers the structure and guidance for movement, meditation, and creative jaunts. Rebecca caters extraordinary vegetarian, gluten-free, seasonal food (tea, snack, lunch). And it doesn’t stop with one day. Also included is a 6-week series of music, meditations, and prompts to keep you in the flow.
Early Bird: $100 if registered by May 24. Late Bird: $125 if registered by June 20
Limited to 20 participants.

WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT NIA?

For more information about Nia and this rich system of training and learning? Everything Nia is at http://www.nianow.com…
If you’re traveling or moving, you can find a teacher or classes wherever you’re going.
Interested in teaching or deepening your practice? Check out the Nia White Belt Training. They are offered all around the world so you can find one near you or where you may want to go!

The question she asked was, “What do I do if I hate it?”
The answer Pema Chodron offers is, “The way to dissolve our resistance to life is to meet it face to face.”
The follow-up question (and there HAS to be a follow-up question, right?) might be, “WHY meet our resistance face to face?”

The answer I offer is three-fold:

1. Calm Center – Our essence is peace and calm. When we are pushed and pulled by likes and dislikes, we move further away from that essence.

2. Curiosity – Staying with my feelings around my dislikes gives me information about my tendencies and patterns. Do I want to control this situation? Do I feel like I don’t matter? Is this an old habit of thinking/ feeling that I don’t need to use anymore?

3. Conscious Choice – By practicing coming face to face with what I don’t like in a low-stakes environment (like Nia class or on the meditation cushion), I am practicing for when life presents me with pain or challenges. If I run away when the stakes are low, I won’t have the tools to be present when the stakes are high.

All the hook-filled playlists from the week are below or you can listen to them by going to Spotify! Dance for free at Spotify! Sign up, follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen!

And first the announce-y type things:

• Safety & Awareness Reminder
Some, especially in the Downtown Group Ex studio, are choosing to dance with weights during freedance. I don’t recommend this particularly (I’m happy to elaborate if you’re interested) but if you do this, please be mindful that you are moving with weights in a room full of barefoot dancers who are moving sometimes quickly around the room. Please do any weight-dancing on the edges so dancers can easily stay clear and engage lots of awareness about where you are in space. Thank you for your awareness!

• FREE Workshop: Conscious Communication with Mary Linn & Susan ~ Saturday, March 25, 3-5pm
A heARTful Action gathering at the Quaker Meeting House at 1104 Forest St, Charlottesville
In our polarized, highly-charged political environment, a simple conversation can be tricky, scary and even dangerous. More and more, we may find ourselves avoiding conversations about the things that matter to us most for fear of an argument or damaging a relationship.
In this free workshop, we will explore practical ways to approach conversations (either in person or on-line) that promote connection, curiosity and clarity. Join us to learn ways of talking to even the prickliest people with calm and kindness. Bring a journal and a friend!
Please RSVP to sjmnia@gmail.com or on the Facebook event page (https://www.facebook.com/events/1921663034719326/) so we know how many people to expect. Wear comfortable clothes, bring a journal and a friend!

• Love Warrior: embody a movement ~ Friday, Apr 7, 6-730pm
a moving experience of activism in support The Front Porch at 219 Water Street E, Cville
Join Susan to experience the new routine, Love Warrior. This is a movement experience designed for everyBody that allows us to experience the sensation of the change we want to see in the world. We can then translate that sensation directly into action. At a time when the arts and creative education are being undermined and undervalued, it is more important than ever to support the arts in our community and creativity in ourselves! The Front Porch will offer music and refreshments will be available before and after we dance. Enjoy an evening of movement, music, and community.
Donate-What-You-Can ~ All proceeds from the event will go to The Front Porch

DOUBLE BONUS: Love Warrior shirts with original art
Just because times are tough doesn’t mean we have to wear black all the time. I’ve been working on a Love Warrior shirt design and together with the people at CustomInk, we created this – check it out!
Would you like one (you know you would)? It’s the perfect outfit for protests, marches, and of course, Love Warrior dancing! If you’re interested, please email me and let me know including what size you’d like. The more we print, the less each shirt will be (if we order 25, they will be around $16) so share this with your friends and I’ll let you know what shakes out before anyone has to commit to anything. Nevertheless…

As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.
Dance on. Shine on.

And first the announce-y things:

• FREE Workshop: Cultivating Resilience with Mary Linn & Susan ~ February 25, 3-5pm
How do we take real care of ourselves in the face of upset and struggle? How do we cultivate healthy resilience? Resilience is the brain’s ability to handle stress in a positive way and to recover quickly. In this workshop, we will explore tools that neuroscience shows wire the brain for an ability to bounce back. Join us for the first in the Heal the Healer series.
Saturday, February 25, 2o17, 3-5pm (arrive at 2:45)
at the Quaker Meeting House at 1104 Forest St, Charlottesville
Please RSVP to sjmnia@gmail.com or on the Facebook event page (https://www.facebook.com/events/1629783820664092/) so we know how many people to expect. Wear comfortable closthes, bring a journal, a donation for use of the space, and a friend!

• Love Warrior: embody a movement ~ Friday, Mar 3, 6-730pm
a moving experience of activism in support of five local refugee families
Buck Mountain Episcopal Church Parish Hall
Join Susan for the launch of a new routine called Love Warrior. This is a movement experience that allows us to experience the sensation of the change we want to see in the world. We can then translate that sensation directly into action.
“Knowledge is only a rumor until it is in the muscle.” – Papua New Guinea Proverb
In times of uncertainty, our first reaction can be to “figure this out.” It is a common approach to go straight to our minds to think our way out of a difficult situation. And nothing will shift, we won’t change a thing until we feel it in our bones, until we embody the change we want to see.
Space limited to 25 participants ~ Please RSVP to Susan at sjmnia@gmail.com
Suggested donation $20-25 and/or specific items of need by the families (more info on this to come)

As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.
Dance on. Shine on.
