Our project of gratitude and invitation to Michael Franti is getting ready to shift to the next phase. Please do make a prayer flag in the next week so Rebecca can begin putting them all together in a long strand of love. We’ll document it with photos and video, and maybe find a way to film us all dancing to one of his songs!

We’re excited to support a weekend of classes and workshops with Nia Trainer, Julie Wylie, July 18-20 and then a Nia White Belt training September 16-22. Events will include lots of things for everyBODY as well as for belts wanting to reconnect to the principles and practices. More info coming soon. For now, mark your calendar!

For more information about Nia and this rich system of training and learning? Everything Nia is at…

If you’re traveling or moving, you can find a teacher or classes wherever you’re going.

Interested in teaching or deepening your practice? Check out the Nia White Belt Training. There is one planned in Charlottesville in September (see above) and lots of other places, too.

art project outfit 111613 001Here I am before class this morning, wearing my Art Project outfit (stained white pants that I died purple yesterday and the red top that was a sundress that I cut down into a shirt). Purple and red.  Do you know the poem?

Warning by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman
I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit.
I can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and a pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beer mats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.

ANYway, today we allowed ourselves the gift of Just This. Focusing our attention right here, right now in the present moment to the one thing that we are doing. One thing at a time. Letting go of the cultural pull toward multi-tasking and distraction. It’s a freeing practice that I, for one, remember and then forget and then remember again.

Give yourself that gift this weekend. Do just this. Just this, right now.
Dance on. Shine on.

black dog sniffing

Cultivating aliveness strikes me as one of the most important things we can do.  We’ve been given these bodies and this time, why not be fully present for it all?  Today in class, I told a story about walking in the woods with my Grampa and his dog, Mandy.  Grampa’s hearing wasn’t good, so what with the wind and the crunching of leaves and sticks, we didn’t talk much.  We just watched Mandy run all over the trail smelling for smells to smell.  After some time of watching her, Grampa said, “For a dog, there are no good smells or bad smells.  There are just smells.”

Like Mandy and her smells, we always have sensation.  Aliveness is about having that curiosity and awareness for all sensations (including smells!), for, as Joanna Macy reminds us, “all sensations are signs of life.”  Jackson Browne’s “Alive in the World” really captures it:

With its beauty and its cruelty

With its heartbreak and its joy

With it constantly giving birth to life

And the forces that destroy

And the infinite power of change

Alive in the world.

No matter what is happening, no matter how old you are, no matter how long you’ve not paid attention, it’s never too late to bring aliveness in!

As always, please let me know if you have any questions and how I can help more.
