IMG_20150810_083441232_HDRWe spent the week playing with simplifying to the bare necessities ~ taking the sometimes-challenging step of letting go of the layers of complication and instead feel the richness in simplicity. Personally, I’ve spent a good part of this year going through the resistance and grief around letting go and doing with less, only to find freedom and space and peace on the other side. It works in movement, in my mind and in my closets. I invite you to find some simplicity for yourself and see how it feels.

Below are all the playlists for the week and you can also find them on Spotify https://www.spotify.com/us/ where you can listen to all the music for free! Follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen! No matter where you are, we can listen and dance together! Note that if you are using the Spotify app for mobile devices, the program inserts “recommended” music that is not on my original playlist. Also, Spotify doesn’t have all the music I have, so sometimes I’ll put up a different version of a song or skip it all together. Have fun with it.

A couple of things to know about:
Team Teaching with Mary Linn September 7 and 8 ~ Now that we’re back in the same city, Mary Linn and I are excited to team teach a classic Carlos routine, Agolo. We’ll be sharing our version of this playful and joyful body of work on Labor Day, Monday, Sept 7, 11-1215pm at Albemarle Square, on Tuesday, Sept 8, 840-940am Downtown and 530-630pm at Albemarle Square.

NOW ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS FOR DANCE. SIT. WRITE. – SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2015, 830am-5pm ~ Come spend the day playing in the intersection of movement, meditation and creativity! No matter how much or little experience you have in any of the three practices, this day can create connections in your body, mind and spirit. In the beautiful Parish Hall of Buck Mountain Episcopal Church, we will provide music, movement, stillness, inspiration and a very nice bell. Plus nourishing and delicious food by Rebecca George’s Dragonfly Kitchen. $85 for the day, $75 if registered before September 15. Limit to 20 participants. Check out testimonials from participants and more details at https://www.facebook.com/events/443642725810963/ or email Susan at sjmnia@gmail.com.

Traveling Posts and Photographs on A Thousand Beautiful Things ~ Find posts from my recent travels, photographs (phone camera only!), words, and essays about gratitude, beauty, mindfulness and more. Please join me there!

As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.
Dance on. Shine on.

*** PLAYLIST NOTE: My playlists can also be found on Spotify https://www.spotify.com/us/ by following “susanmcculley” (no space) and look for Public Playlists. Sometimes music is not available on Spotify — most notably this week, the beautiful version of simple gifts by Alison Krauss and Yo-Yo Ma — so I may replace with another version or skip songs. What you find below is exactly what I used in class. ***

generosity give arms wide open

“Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.”
― Simone Weil

It takes courage to give generously ~ money, gifts, but mostly ourselves. Are you willing to share yourself? To offer the gifts that only you can give? How generous are you willing to be?

Here’s an exquisite version of Boots of Spanish Leather, a song we danced to this week. As only Bob Dylan can, it tells the story of giving gifts and the only gift we really want from another.

Below is the music from the week ~ but first some announce-y type things:

My friend Tonya Ridings is teaching Kundalini Yoga at acac! As taught by Yogi Bhajan, PhD, Kundalini Yoga is the yoga of awareness. It consists of a series of physical and breathing exercises, chanting, mantra and meditation. This ancient technology heals and builds from the inside out. This class is appropriate for beginners. Wednesdays 1:30-3 at ACAC Downtown. Join Tonya and become your best self!

• It’s St Patrick’s Day next week! Join me on Monday (1045am acac Albemarle Square) and Tuesday (9am acac Downtown) for Firedance: the energetic, joyful Riverdance routine! Be sure to be wearin’ your green, donchaknow?

Nia Jam Friday, March 20, 545-7pm, at acac Downtown Group Ex Studio ~ Magic
Join Kate Aust, Anne Wolf and Loring Myles for the debut of Magic, a new routine by Ann Christiansen. The intent of this body of work is to allow you to see and find grounding and grace in your dance: G (grounded), R (relaxed), A(alert/aware), C (centered), E (energized). Bring a guest for free!

Mindful Movement & Metta at Buck Mountain Episcopal Church Parish Hall (4133 Earlysville Road, Earlysville VA ~ GPS takes you to the church, keep going a little bit to the white building just past the church yard), Friday, March 27, 2015, 6-715pm. Experience the No Words routine ~ all instrumental music and is taught in silence ~ interwoven with the words of lovingkindness or metta meditation. Returning to the meditation throughout the routine can help keep the mind focused and the heart open. Absolutely no experience is needed in movement or meditation to participate. The event is free to all with a request for donations to the Buck Mountain Wellness Ministry (suggested $12).

dance. sit. write. April 18, 845am-4pm at Buck Mountain Episcopal Church Parish Hall in Earlysville. Spend a day exploring the interconnection of movement, meditation and creativity. No experience in any of the three practices is needed. We’ll provide what you need including incredible food from Rebecca George’s Dragonfly Kitchen. Find all the details here and email me for a registration form (sjmnia@gmail.com). I’ve been working on this for years. I would love to share it with you. EARLY BIRD PRICE of $60 if you register before March 21!

As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.

Dance on. Shine on.

ok go here it goes againSo good to play and dance for a week between my summer camp and beach junkets! And a helpful reminder about all the choices we really do have in every moment.

Below are the playlists for classes this week. In particular, I enjoyed some Dead Can Dance, The Derek Trucks Band and Eva Cassidy.  Safri Duo totally rocked it for us on Tuesday morning.  Evidently, these two Danish percussionists have been banging on drums together since they were youngsters and boy HOWDY do I love Played A Live!  And for your video-watching, treadmill-dancing pleasure, please enjoy OK Go’s Here It Goes Again  (now THAT’S a treadmill workout! Disclaimer: please don’t try this at home or at acac :).

I’ll be away at the beach for the next couple of weeks, so please check the ACAC Schedule page for the teaching line-up. The next time I’m teaching is Friday, July 26 at 1125am at ACAC Albemarle Square. Come join me as I’ll have lots of pent up Nia Energy by then! Then I’ll be back on my regular schedule (M 1045 & W 1055 Albemarle Square and T/Th 9 Downtown) for the week of July 29.

Happy, healthy, dance-full summertime, everybody!

Xoxo

hard body cleansing punishmentAfter a week of playing with Soft Strength and the Power of Vulnerability (including teaching with my tummy showing!!), I’m ready for a weekend. So here are the playlist from the week plus three videos for your viewing pleasure:

(1) Brene Brown’s TED Talk on the Power of Vulnerability which I think should just be required viewing for everybody,

(2) Hallelujah by Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris because I love me some Justin and some Leonard Cohen (and a new student, Thomas, told me that Cohen wrote hundreds and hundreds of verses for this song!) and this version helps me breathe deeper

(3) And finally, Jimmy Fallon’s version of Ho Hey by the Chickeneers which has been making me giggle and snort all week (thank you, Susan Kaufman!!)

EnJOY!  Now get off your computer and go play in the sun! As always, let me know how I can help more,

Love,
Susan
