The choice to pay attention, to invest in the experience we are having in the moment, is one of the most essential parts of the practice we do together. Shining the light of awareness gives us a view of what’s happening that we didn’t have before and allows us to be more skillful in our responses. Raise awareness to release attachment and reveal spaciousness, creativity, possibilities, healing.

Below are our playlists for the week – as well as the notes about the songs for which I adapted choreography. If you’d like to listen to them, you can find almost all the music on Spotify where you can listen for free! And in general, please let me know if you have any questions about any of the music we dance to!

And first, some announcements of things that are happening!

Share Your Word for 2019 … and Be Entered to Win a Nia Pendant
Every year, I choose a word as my focus. My word for 2019 is CLEAR. As part of embodying it, I am clearing my spaces … inside and out. I haven’t worn this this Nia pendant in a long time and I’d love to share it. I’d also love to make a piece of art that celebrates our 2019 words. So, in the comments below please write your word and your name (or you can email me at sjmnia@gmail.com), then I’ll make a piece of art with our words (no names)! I’ll enter everybody who gives me their word by Monday, January 21 and draw one for the pendant (if you want to have your word as part of the art but don’t want the pendant, just put an askerisk next to your name)!

Mindful Self-Compassion 8-Week Course with Laura DeVault & Anna Vanhoy
We live in a world full of environmental challenges, political upheaval, and divisive rhetoric. Our sense of well-being can get worn down, especially if it is dependent on our latest success or failure. Mindful self-compassion takes a different approach. When you turn toward your feelings of distress with compassion, you can limit self-criticism and offset its negative effects, enabling you to achieve your highest potential and a more fulfilled life. (You might even get a better night’s sleep.)
Every Monday from 1 – 4 PM for 8 weeks, starting January 21, 2019. $450 includes 8 classes, plus a half-day retreat on Sat., Feb. 23.
To Register, contact Maureen Otten, 434-220-4686 weekdays 9 – 5, or email Anna and Laura at info.mscdv@gmail.com. For more, go here. https://www.facebook.com/events/1927255664236835/

p9 hand tree
The gifts of Principle 9, The Upper Extremities, are many and rich. This week, I’ve enjoyed awakening the muscles in my arms, shoulders and back as we mindfully played with hand movements. Building strength, as my yoga teacher Sara says, with intention. I’ve also enjoyed the pleasure of really touching what I’m touching: sensing the coolness of my water jar, the smoothness of my cat’s fur, the textures on my bike handles, the calloused warmth of my favorite carpenter’s hands. I’d love to hear about what you uncovered this week.

And, an invitation: please join me and a slew of really cool writers at a reading/book launch party on Sunday, November 2 at the Writer’s House in Charlottesville. I’ll be reading an excerpt of one of my essays ~ a first for me ~ but you’ll get readings from experienced folks, too! All the details are here. I’d love to see you there!

You can find all the music from this week’s classes below.  enJOY.

P4 Freedance longThis week, we played with Principle 4: FreeDance ~ and how it applies to our movement, the integration of body and mind, and our lives! FreeDance is a process that invites me to lose myself, redefine myself and find myself. What we do in class has the potential to rewire the body and mind to break habit and find our authentic selves no matter what we’re doing. FreeParent! FreeGarden! FreeCook! FreeWrite! FreeLove! Free your mind and the rest will follow.

On Wednesday, we marked the 79th birthday of one of my favorite poets, Mary Oliver. Her poem, The Summer Day, is a perfect one for Principle 4. As is the anniversary of September 11. We never know what will happen. Let’s be here now and let go of our small selves to uncover what is possible.

Below are the playlists from this week as well as Oliver’s The Summer Day.

Next week, I will be celebrating acac’s 30th Anniversary on Monday and Tuesday and Saturday with a playlist of 1984-ish music:
Monday, Sept 15, 1045-12noon, Albemarle Square Studio A
Tuesday, Sept 16, 9-1010am, Downtown Group Ex Studio
Saturday, Sept 20, 9-1010am, Downtown Studio A
Wear your best 80s gear so I won’t be the only one! And there will probably be 80s tunes dropped in all week!

Dance on. Shine on.

P.S. FOCUS POCUS MUSIC GIVE AWAY (MORE WAYS TO SCORE GREAT NIA MUSIC!): The offer is still good that I made in the Principle 2: Natural Time Post: email me (sjmnia@gmail.com) a picture of yourself wearing the 13-Moon Calendar color of the day (or wear the color to class and TELL me that you did it intentionally and didn’t just HAPPEN to) and I’ll send you (or hand it to you if you’re in Cville) a CD of official Nia music, either Sanjana or Dreamwalker or the Official Playlist for the Unofficial Guide! And now there are two more ways to play: (1) wear some sort of 80s-ish garb to class next week in celebration of acac’s 30th anniversary or (2) comment below (or on the Focus Pocus Facebook Page) about how you used Principle 4 in your life recently! I’m only announcing this here so only Focus Pocus readers are in on this! [And even though it sounds like a McDonald’s contest disclaimer: good in the US only (unless you want me to email you the tunes); limit one per person; while supplies last; void where prohibited.]

The Summer Day by Mary Oliver

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

Brave Nia HQAnother week of embodying Brave, with some new free dance and cool-down music (that rocked, I must say ~ thanks to Kira Hower and friends for music suggestions!).

If you haven’t seen Brene Brown’s TED Talk that I referred to this week, The Power of Vulnerability, do check it out. It’s an amazing 20 minutes. And her follow-up one, Listening to Shame, is great, too.

I am grateful for the practice/work/play that we do together. Thank you for being part of our mindful movement. As always, I am interested in how you are doing and how I might help more. “Say what you want to say / and let the words fall out” as Sara Bareilles says in Brave’s title track!

I look forward to hearing from you and dancing together soon.
Dance on. Shine on.

brave india arieThanks to everyone who danced Brave with me this week (literally or through our cyber connection).  This is a routine that I’ve been getting ready to teach for years.  As India Arie sings, “This is a true confession / of a life learned lesson / I was sent here to share with y’all.”   It has been a scary joy to share it this week.

One of the gifts I’ve received from this routine has been hanging out with this music.  Every song was carefully chosen for its energy and its poetry and every one is about standing up for ourselves and for each other.  After listening to it for two months, I feel like I’ve got 14 friends in my head reminding me that I am worthy and beautiful and amazing.  So here is the playlist.  Go download it and see how it feels to let this music soak into you.

Even if you don’t have the time or inclination to get the whole playlist, below are some selected lyrics to zing your strings. Check them out and let them in.

Some other potentially string-zinging things:
–          Bev Wann is offering her powerful good Movement & Meditation class in a five-session series at acac downtown on Thursday evenings 7-815pm starting on April 10.  I recommend this work highly – it has made a difference in my life.  You can register or get more information at acac member services or by calling 434.984.3800.
–          Nia Blue Belt, Jennifer Myer is playing in a grand performance of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, April 6 at 3pm at the University of Richmond.  Admission is free.  You can get more information here.
–          If you haven’t seen the video of Sara Bareillis’ Brave, the title track of our routine, it’s worth a watch and this behind the scenes vid is pretty cool, too.
–         One of the bravest things I’ve done lately is send my writing to broader sites for publication. I felt a little naked when this one came out — for good reason, I guess. To see my article that was published on Elephant Journal this week, click here.

From Video by India.Arie

I’m not the average girl from your video
And I ain’t built like a supermodel
But I learned to love myself unconditionally,
Because I am a queen

When I look in the mirror and the only one there is me
Every freckle on my face is where it’s suppose to be
And I know my creator didn’t make no mistakes on me
My feet, my thighs, my Lips, my eyes, I’m loving what I see

From Beautiful by Audio Adrenaline

Just the sound of Your name is a beautiful thing
And I love You, I love You, I love You

From Shame by Jill Scott

It’s a shame!
You’re missin’ out on me.
And it’s a shame.
You don’t even know my name.

From Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars

I know, I know
When I compliment her she won’t believe me
And it’s so, it’s so
Sad to think that she don’t see what I see

If perfect’s what you’re searching for
Then just stay the same
So don’t even bother asking if you look okay
You know I’ll say,

When I see your face
There’s not a thing that I would change
‘Cause you’re amazing
Just the way you are

From Complicated by Yonder Mountain String Band

It’s a frame of mind
It’s a surfacing you notice
from the corner of your eye
You can see for miles
With an inner light that’s guiding you home

From Born This Way by Lady Gaga

I’m beautiful in my way,
‘Cause God makes no mistakes
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born this way

Don’t hide yourself in regret,
Just love yourself and you’re set
I’m on the right track, baby
I was born this way

From Shake It by Michael Franti & Spearhead

You got a little broken nail, hair outta place, a little bit of extra middle right around the waist.
But all of them things I never ever hesitate, because the thing about you baby is the smile on your face.

From Brave by Sarah Bareillis

You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love
Or you can start speaking up

Nothing’s gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle ‘neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

From Let It Go by Alex Boye

Let it go, let it go
And I’ll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on

From Winter by Tori Amos

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses have gone ahead
I tell you that I’ll always want you near
You say that things change
My dear
