For me, it is sweet potato pudding. When the COVID crisis began in March, I made choices about habits I wanted to cultivate once my routine and schedule fell away. I wanted to move every day, at least some of it outside. I wanted to eat nutrient-dense meals and avoid sugar and alcohol. I wanted to read more and sleep more.

But I didn’t see the sweet potato pudding thing coming.

Given my whole food plant-based approach to food, I don’t go in much for desserts. But a friend turned me on to this pudding recipe that I then riffed on for weeks (interested in the recipe? Just put a comment below!). It was fantastically sweet (without sugar), creamy (without cream), and full of flavor. By the time social distancing started, I was making quarts of the stuff in a whole slew of varieties (spiced chocolate, anybody?) … and eating it right out of the serving bowl. Every. Single. Night.

Habits can happen this way: they sneak up and slide in under the radar without us noticing, especially in stressful times. Kris Herbert talks about this helpfully in her Insight Timer meditation, Mindfulness in Isolation: Habit Change. Her practice helped me recognize that I was doing something that wasn’t benefiting me and to see that I had a choice.

Today’s Nourishing Movement uses mindfulness to hack our habits. By noticing them with kind curiosity, we can check out the triggers, habits and rewards that we all do and ask if we really want to keep doing what we’re doing. The key, for me, is to be easy and playful with it rather than harsh or critical. You can find the video here. (VIDEO NOTE: For an unknown reason, the audio seems uneven to me. Habits happen to everybody. Our mindful practice gives us a chance to check ours out and make choices about them.
