Especially when life feels overwhelming or out of control in some way, it’s a helpful reminder that I actually do, in every moment, have choices. Even if the choices aren’t great or are narrow, I’m still the captain of my own little ship. And that’s power.

All the playlists from the week are below or you can listen to them by going to Spotify! Dance for free at Spotify! Sign up, follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen!

And first the announce-y type things:

• Safety & Awareness Reminder
Some, especially in the Downtown Group Ex studio, are choosing to dance with weights during freedance. I don’t recommend this particularly (I’m happy to elaborate if you’re interested) but if you do this, please be mindful that you are moving with weights in a room full of barefoot dancers who are moving sometimes quickly around the room. Please do any weight-dancing on the edges so dancers can easily stay clear and engage lots of awareness about where you are in space. Thank you for your awareness!

• FREE Workshop: Conscious Communication with Mary Linn & Susan ~ March 25, 3-5pm
A FREE heARTful Action gathering, Saturday, March 25, 2o17, 3-5pm
at the Quaker Meeting House at 1104 Forest St, Charlottesville
In our polarized, highly-charged political environment, a simple conversation can be tricky, scary and even dangerous. More and more, we may find ourselves avoiding conversations about the things that matter to us most for fear of an argument or damaging a relationship.
In this free workshop, we will explore practical ways to approach conversations (either in person or on-line) that promote connection, curiosity and clarity. Join us to learn ways of talking to even the prickliest people with calm and kindness. Bring a journal and a friend!
Please RSVP to sjmnia@gmail.com or on the Facebook event page (https://www.facebook.com/events/1921663034719326/) so we know how many people to expect. Wear comfortable clothes, bring a journal and a friend!

• Love Warrior: embody a movement ~ Friday, Apr 7, 6-730pm
a moving experience of activism in support The Front Porch at 219 Water Street E, Cville
Join Susan to experience a new routine called Love Warrior. This is a movement experience designed for everyBody that allows us to experience the sensation of the change we want to see in the world. We can then translate that sensation directly into action.
At a time when the arts and creative education are being undermined and undervalued, it is more important than ever to support the arts in our community and creativity in ourselves! The Front Porch will offer music and refreshments will be available before and after we dance. Enjoy an evening of movement, music, and community.
Donate-What-You-Can ~ All proceeds from the event will go to The Front Porch

Love Warrior shirts with original art
Just because times are tough doesn’t mean we have to wear black all the time. I’ve been working on a Love Warrior shirt design and together with the people at CustomInk, we created this – check it out!
Would you like one (you know you would)? It’s the perfect outfit for protests, marches, and of course, Love Warrior dancing! If you’re interested, please email me and let me know including what size you’d like. The more we print, the less each shirt will be (if we order 25, they will be around $16) so share this with your friends and I’ll let you know what shakes out before anyone has to commit to anything. Nevertheless…

On the 7th day we dance.sit.create… Saturday, May 13, 2o17, 8:30am-5pm
For the 7th time, we will dance.sit.create. Come spend a delicious day playing at the sweet intersection of movement, stillness and art. We’ll explore the creative magic of the number 7 and the power of play for inspiration and restoration. No experience in anything is necessary. All you need is a willingness to see what happens and eat delicious, healthy meals. The retreat provides everything you need for an uplifting, rejuvenating day. Susan offers the structure and guidance for movement, meditation, and creative jaunts. Rebecca caters extraordinary vegetarian, gluten-free, seasonal food (tea, snack, lunch). And it doesn’t stop with one day. Also included is a 6-week series of music, meditations, and prompts to keep you in the flow.
Early Bird: $100 if registered by April 13. Late Bird: $125 if registered by May 10
Limited to 20 participants.
Checks to SusaNia LLC and mailed to 1255 Sunset Avenue Ext., Charlottesville VA 22903 with registration form or at http://www.susanmcculley.com.

As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.

spin-to-choice-120716
This week we chose where to focus awareness rather than be caught up in the spin and spiral…except when we were caught up in the spin and spiral. That’s why they call it a practice, not a perfect.

All the playlists from the week are below or you can listen to them by going to Spotify! Rock out for free at Spotify! Sign up for free, follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen!

And first the announce-y things:

• Join us for a heARTful Action (brain)storming on Saturday, December 10, 3-5pm
Whatever your political leanings, these are difficult days. Now more than ever, we need to use our creativity and art to make our community (large and small) a kinder, more inclusive, healthier place.
The focus of heARTful Action is on putting positive, loving action into the world, directed particularly to the least powerful among us including (but not limited to) black and brown people, immigrants, LGBTQ people, Muslims, elderly and low-income people, and anyone else feeling compromised, including the environment. All are welcome to our mutually supportive community.
We are gathering this Saturday, Dec 10 from 3-5pm to share our personal intentions for heARTful action and brainstorming ideas for things that we can do individually, in small groups and/or as a larger community.
Please join us at 1255 Sunset Avenue Extd in Charlottesville (let me know if you need directions — you can park in our driveway or in the church parking lot across the street) in the heARTful Action Clubhouse. Please bring your personal intention and your ideas for ways we can live out our those intentions and probably a notebook if you’re someone who likes to write things down. The space has a few chairs and floor pillows, but if you have something you’d like to sit on, bring that, too! We’ll have tea and hot water available (and knowing us, we’ll also have snacks).

All who are interested in being part of our heARTful intention* are welcome. Let me know if you have questions and please let us know if you can come so we can plan accordingly!

* heARTful action ~ Intention
Love warriors using our creativity and connection to sustain movement toward kindness, inclusivity, and health in our community and world. We are a community supporting each other in the expression of our unique gifts while we stay responsive and awake to the needs within us and around us. We act from a place of aliveness and positive purpose.
You can join us on Facebook here and/or ask me and I’ll add you to our email list. All are welcome, invite anyone who you’d like to include. And if you have a group doing similar work, we’d love to network with you and hear about what you’re doing!

If you’re traveling or moving, you can find a teacher or classes wherever you’re going.

I know I'm not alone 052416

You are supported intrinsically at the core and base of your body – even if you don’t always notice it. You are also supported intrinsically in the world – even if you don’t always notice it. May we all shine a light on the support that is within us and around us…and dance while we’re doing it!

This week we used the Elegant Stumbling routine to give attention to the side and core body and to mindfully feel the support there. You can find all playlists below or you can choose to listen to them by going to Spotify. You can listen for free at Spotify! Sign up for free, follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen!

And first the announce-y type things (and don’t miss the last one, it’s a doosie):

• Memorial Day class + ACAC schedule
Join me on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 1045-12noon for an Inspired movement experience! We’ll play with the last of the 16 routines I’ve created in 16 years of teaching: Inspired. https://focuspocusnow.com/2015/11/08/inspired/ Come be inspired.
Acac will be open from 8am-4pm on Memorial Day.

• Routine Seventeen Music Search ~ Galactic Return: Blue Rhythmic Hand
What are you listening to and what do you love to dance to? After going through the first 16 routines, I’m starting to play with the next one and I’m looking for music! Galactic Return will focus on spirals, circles and repeating patterns. My current plan is to have it ready for a special class on Wednesday, August 3, my 52nd birthday. So please, send me some tuneage, friends (to sjmnia@gmail.com)!

• Route 29 Construction Update ~ Leave extra time for getting to and from acac Albemarle Square
Anyone who has gone to acac Albemarle Square this week knows that construction on 29 is moving forward apace. From May 23 to early September you will not be able to cross 29 on Rio Road. During this time period, several movements at that intersection will be closed and require detours:
Travelers on Rio Road approaching the intersection from either direction (east or west) will not be able to cross over Route 29 and all left turns at the intersection will be closed.
Here is a helpful ” Get-Around Map “ that shows the movements that will be open and closed during this period. (Green arrows = open. Orange lines = no crossing over.)
For people needing to make any of the movements that will be closed, here is a map of recommended detour routes.

• Ageless Grace at Buck Mountain Episcopal Church in Earlysville with Sheila Queen ~ Every other Saturday, starting May 21, at 11 a.m. in Deese Hall
A wellness program for all ages and abilities, Ageless Grace combines physical activity, brain exercises, imagination, and a sense of humor with music to stimulate a sense of pleasure and well being. Movements address joint mobility, spinal flexibility, brain coordination, and more. The class is done seated, making it inviting for those who may have physical limitations or balance issues. There is NO choreography to learn. All you need are comfortable clothes and a willingness to try something new! Join us and bring a friend. Suggested $5 donations help pay for this class and support Buck Mountain’s Health & Wellness Ministry.

• Myofascial Release Workshop with Mia Hamza ~ June 19 at EDGE Studio
Mia Hamza is one of the best yoga instructors I have – and I have amazing yoga instructors – and her Myofascial Release Workshop is one of the best I’ve attended. In this 3-hour workshop, Mia will guide you on an exploration of your entire connective-fascia system. You will experience a complete, full-body myofascial release that will leave you feeling amazing. And I mean amazing. This workshop is open to all bodies who can lie down on a mat on the floor and may be especially helpful for yoga students and athletes who cross train. Please don’t miss this. $45 pre-register / $55 the day of the workshop. For more information, connect with Liz Reynolds at elizabethrey@acac.com

As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.

SUPPORT 051916

sup-port
verb
1. bear all or part of the weight of; hold up.
2. give assistance to, especially financially; enable to function or act.

My legs support me
Except when I’m flat out on the floor
Then, the earth supports me
The cat hops onto my back which oddly feels like support
My beloved, my fandamly, my friends, my people
Green tea and home grown lettuce and the music of Michael Franti
Movement and teachings and breath and stillness support me
Connection, encouragement, gratitude
And kindness in the comment section
My work and my husband’s work and gifts from those who have come before
Art and stories well-told and the success of people who rock
The sky, strangely enough, supports me as much as the earth does
And things that flower and fruit and fly
Dogs with their heads out of car windows
Clean water and hot showers and dental floss
And if I look deeper
All the people who build and repair and clean
Those who pave the roads and scrub commodes
And lift fallen lines and make laws for the good
The one who lets me into the turn lane and
Wishes me well in the market or on the sidewalk
A texted picture of a doe-eyed dog or a guinea pig or a genuine “how are you doing?”
The invisible net of love that I have to reach for to feel
I just have to remember all that support
When I’m flat out on the floor

P.S. For information on the systems of support in our bodies, you might enjoy this post about the Elegant Stumbling routine that we’ll do in classes this week.

carlos 1(happy birthday Carlos — and Rachel!)

Relaxation is who you are.

The practice is about being who you are.

So the practice is about relaxation.

Simple as that.

Welllll, sometimes less simple when life gets complicated or scary or painful or overwhelming. Which is why we practice when the stakes are low: on the cushion, on the mat, in the studio, or in Starbucks when that guy is doing that thing with his stirrer.

Keep relaxing into whatever is happening. Keep relaxing into presence.

This week I’ve been playing with a new routine called Elegant Stumbling. Thank you to all for being my guinea pigs and for being willing to relax with the creative process. Thank you also to Rachel Horsley for dropping in to teach a song on Wednesday (it was not just her birthday, but Carlos AyaRosas’ birthday!) and for embodying relaxation.

A note about music: many of the songs in Elegant Stumbling were given to me (part of the reason this piece has its name is that I stumbled into much of the music). My yoga teachers, Mia Hamza and Monica Buckley, are incredible music resources. Sara Marks reminded me of the great song Ooh Child which inspired the unusual case of the same song used twice in one routine. And Rachel Horsley gave me Catherine MacLellan’s Everything’ll Be Alright (which I needed. I really did). So if you have music you love, I would love it if you’d share it!

Below are all the playlists from the week. Join me on Spotify https://www.spotify.com/us/ where you can listen to all the music for free! Just follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen! No matter where you are, we can listen and dance together!  <strong>Note that if you are using the Spotify app for mobile devices, the program inserts “recommended” music that is not on my original playlist.</strong> Also, Spotify doesn’t have all the music I have, so sometimes I’ll put up a different version of a song or skip it all together. Have fun with it.

A couple of reminders:

  • TUESDAY & THURSDAY DOWNTOWN 840-940AM! ~ acac downtown Tuesday and Thursday morning Nia with Susan is from 840am-940am! Come play and let your practice embody your whole day!
  • NEW NIA 101 SATURDAYS FROM 1230-1245 WITH MARY LINN! ~ Mary Linn offer Nia 101 before her Saturday class: an introduction to Nia’s 52 Moves to refresh current students and help new students get a feel for the moves. Nia 101 is from 1230-1245 and class is from 1245-145, at Albemarle Square, Studio A.
  • SAVE THE DATE: DANCE. SIT. WRITE. DAY SHOP HAPPENS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2015 ~ Mark your calendar for the next opportunity to spend the day playing in the intersection of movement, meditation and creativity! More details to come this summer (you can follow along at https://www.facebook.com/events/443642725810963/ ) Let me know if you have questions (sjmnia@gmail.com)

As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.

Dance on. Shine on.
