First, the difficult news: it is with deep sadness that I share that our friend and long-time Nia dancer, Marie-Therese Pain died unexpectedly last week. We will miss her bright smile and generous, positive energy in classes. When it’s ready, her obituary will be here and a funeral mass will be held at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church (401 Alderman Road Charlottesville, VA 22903) at 11AM on Saturday, May 13th.

It’s been a week of wobbles. Which is a good thing…albeit often an uncomfortable one. Whether it’s in body, mind and emotions, it’s easy to run from awkward wobbly feelings but then we lose the chance to learn and grow and get stronger. So wobble on, my friends.

All the playlists from the week are below or you can listen to them by going to Spotify! Dance for free at Spotify! Sign up, follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen!

This week’s announcements and news:

• Interview on Home Grown on Sunday, May 7 at 10am
Listen in on Sunday, May 7, to an interview on Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art on 94.7 WPVC FM, Charlottesville. Susan will talk with hosts Leslie M. Scott-Jones and David Vaughn Straughn about movement, stillness and art…and dance.sit.create. It will also be on a Facebook Live Stream https://www.facebook.com/HomeGrownWPVC/

• Love Warrior: embody an evolving movement ~ Sunday, May 7, 3-430pm
a moving experience of activism in support of a local Syrian immigrant family
Join Susan to experience a new and evolving routine called Love Warrior. This is a movement experience designed for everyBody that allows us to experience the sensation of the change we want to see in the world. We can then translate that sensation directly into action. If you’ve not done this routine before, this is a great time to experience it. If you have, come do it with us again ~~ it’s always changing.
The way we treat the most vulnerable among us says the most about who we are. Enjoy an evening of movement, music, and community and at the same time offer support to a Syrian immigrant family. Home made Syrian baked treats will be available for sale after class!
Donate-What-You-Can ~ All proceeds from the event will go to our Syrian neighbors

It may be that, as Theodore Roosevelt said, “comparison is the thief of joy.” While I contend that contrast is a joyful thing, the line between the two can be a fine one. We can be looking at the same things but they feel different depending on which view we take. I’ve been noticing when the heavy, judge-y energy of comparison shows up with its thunders of “I should or shouldn’t” and when the “Wow You! Wow Me! Wow Us!” energy of contrast gives each of us the permission to be our amazing selves.

Now I think about it, that’s a contrast right there: between comparison and contrast. May we spend our days in the latter.

And first upcoming coolness:

• Scheduling Answer: Wednesday class
Looking toward the summer schedule, we have decided to leave the Wednesday class time at 11am-12:15pm. Thank you for your input.

• Safety & Awareness Reminder
Some, especially in the Downtown Group Ex studio, are choosing to dance with weights during freedance. I don’t recommend this particularly (I’m happy to elaborate if you’re interested) but if you do this, please be mindful that you are moving with weights in a room full of barefoot dancers who are moving sometimes quickly around the room. Please do any weight-dancing on the edges so dancers can easily stay clear and engage lots of awareness about where you are in space. Thank you for your awareness!

• Love Warrior: embody a movement ~ Friday, Apr 7, 6-730pm
a moving experience of activism in support The Front Porch at 219 Water Street E, Cville
Join Susan to experience a new routine called Love Warrior. This is a movement experience designed for everyBody that allows us to experience the sensation of the change we want to see in the world. We can then translate that sensation directly into action.

At a time when the arts and creative education are being undermined and undervalued, it is more important than ever to support the arts in our community and creativity in ourselves! The Front Porch will offer music and refreshments will be available before and after we dance. Enjoy an evening of movement, music, and community.
Donate-What-You-Can ~ All proceeds from the event will go to The Front Porch

Just because times are tough doesn’t mean we have to wear black all the time. I’ve been working on a Love Warrior shirt design and together with the people at CustomInk, we created this – check it out!  We are having a batch printed now and they will be around $16 each. I ordered some extras. Let me know if you’d like one!

Especially when life feels overwhelming or out of control in some way, it’s a helpful reminder that I actually do, in every moment, have choices. Even if the choices aren’t great or are narrow, I’m still the captain of my own little ship. And that’s power.

A FREE heARTful Action gathering, Saturday, March 25, 2o17, 3-5pm
at the Quaker Meeting House at 1104 Forest St, Charlottesville
In our polarized, highly-charged political environment, a simple conversation can be tricky, scary and even dangerous. More and more, we may find ourselves avoiding conversations about the things that matter to us most for fear of an argument or damaging a relationship.
In this free workshop, we will explore practical ways to approach conversations (either in person or on-line) that promote connection, curiosity and clarity. Join us to learn ways of talking to even the prickliest people with calm and kindness. Bring a journal and a friend!
Please RSVP to sjmnia@gmail.com or on the Facebook event page (https://www.facebook.com/events/1921663034719326/) so we know how many people to expect. Wear comfortable clothes, bring a journal and a friend!

My beloved yoga teacher, Kelly Stine, shared this quote from child development researcher and author, L.R. Knost this week. It was just what I needed.

Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world. All things break. And all things can be mended. Not with time, as they say, but with intention. So go. Love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally. The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is you.

If you missed my post on noncomplementarity and tonglen, please find it here. The stories and practices you’ll find there speak directly to the practice of turning toward suffering with love. Thanks to all who joined us for classes this week and to those who join us remotely. You all matter.

This week we chose where to focus awareness rather than be caught up in the spin and spiral…except when we were caught up in the spin and spiral. That’s why they call it a practice, not a perfect.

And first the announce-y things:

• Join us for a heARTful Action (brain)storming on Saturday, December 10, 3-5pm
Whatever your political leanings, these are difficult days. Now more than ever, we need to use our creativity and art to make our community (large and small) a kinder, more inclusive, healthier place.
The focus of heARTful Action is on putting positive, loving action into the world, directed particularly to the least powerful among us including (but not limited to) black and brown people, immigrants, LGBTQ people, Muslims, elderly and low-income people, and anyone else feeling compromised, including the environment. All are welcome to our mutually supportive community.
We are gathering this Saturday, Dec 10 from 3-5pm to share our personal intentions for heARTful action and brainstorming ideas for things that we can do individually, in small groups and/or as a larger community.
Please join us at 1255 Sunset Avenue Extd in Charlottesville (let me know if you need directions — you can park in our driveway or in the church parking lot across the street) in the heARTful Action Clubhouse. Please bring your personal intention and your ideas for ways we can live out our those intentions and probably a notebook if you’re someone who likes to write things down. The space has a few chairs and floor pillows, but if you have something you’d like to sit on, bring that, too! We’ll have tea and hot water available (and knowing us, we’ll also have snacks).

All who are interested in being part of our heARTful intention* are welcome. Let me know if you have questions and please let us know if you can come so we can plan accordingly!
