There is a chorus in my head. A whole crew of voices telling me everything that I should be doing or that I could have done better or that I’m messing up. I call them The Shitty Committee and it can be crushing to hear their unending commentary.
We all have thought-voices that we picked up from others, usually when we were young, and then took on as our own. The Committee can be corrosive when we start believing everything they weigh in on and even acting on what they say. I have a friend who has one particular voice that tells him to do things which are not in his best interest. He calls that voice “Nancy.”
And while these thought-voices may be trying to protect me and keep me safe, their strategy is no longer working. It helps me to remember that they are using an old game plan from when I was little and that I don’t need to habitually follow their instruction.
Today’s Dharma Dance Swirl practice gives us a chance to focus on breaking movement and thinking habits by dropping into sensation and then allowing ourselves to move in our own way. It’s a chance to notice if Nancy & The Shitty Committee (or any other thought patterns) show up. Find the video here.
