It can seem counter-intuitive, but often taking deep care of ourselves is the best way to help the people we love. In today’s restorative yoga practice, I offer deeply relaxing postures ~~ that I need. Just like the poem, Beannacht by John O’Donohue (find it below), an intimate experience of our own needs in times of trouble can lead to offerings that can be just what someone else needs.

Gather a few supportive props from around your house, make a little time and space, and let your body unwind itself. Find the video here.

Props for the Practice:
• 1 or 2 blankets (one for softness underneath and one for warmth on top)
• 3 firm pillows
• 2 bath towels
• 1 strap, belt, long scarf
• eye covering
• tea or water

This is the poem that I needed, gave to my sweet parents years ago and which in turn was what my mom needed this week.

Beannacht – A Blessing by John O’Donohue

On the day when
the weight deadens
on your shoulders
and you stumble,
may the clay dance
to balance you.

And when your eyes
freeze behind
the grey window
and the ghost of loss
gets into you,
may a flock of colours,
indigo, red, green
and azure blue,
come to awaken in you
a meadow of delight.

When the canvas frays
in the currach of thought
and a stain of ocean
blackens beneath you,
may there come across the waters
a path of yellow moonlight
to bring you safely home.

May the nourishment of the earth be yours,
may the clarity of light be yours,
may the fluency of the ocean be yours,
may the protection of the ancestors be yours.

And so may a slow
wind work these words
of love around you,
an invisible cloak
to mind your life.

I mention two of my teachers in this practice. Here’s how to find them:

~ Shandoah Goldman is a wonderful restorative yoga teacher who generously offers an online class on Thursdays at 11am/Eastern … and who, no joke, changed my life. She is an inspiration and I cannot recommend her teaching enough. You can find her here and here is a recording of a class she offered last week (which I loved).
~ Phoenix, the Black Belt Relaxation Master, is the wise star of my first book, Buddha Cat: Learning Awareness, Presence & Self-Care from a Teacher who Sometimes Barfs on the Bed. She seems to enjoy my teaching from home since she keeps showing up in class! You can learn more from her chill self in the book which you can find here.

Help me to continue to create Dancing Water Daily practices! No matter how far apart we are physically, we are all connected. The path that we all move along together is held by an Invisible Net of Love that is always there even if we can’t see it. The Dancing Water Daily practices is my thread in that net. Please support my work by offering a donation so I can keep creating these practices for you. With your generous support, I can continue to invest in making these classes available to anyone who can benefit. Please click here to be part of the Dancing Water Daily Net of Love. And please “Send to a Friend” to avoid PayPal fees! Suggested donation: $5 a class or $15 a week ~ and truly, any amount helps enormously.

Shout outs to this week’s generous anonymous donors and Avril Somlyo , Kristin vonThelen, Susan Perry and Kathie Anzalone! A thousand thanks, friends! Together we can extend this Net of Love to reach everyone who needs it.

AND if, like me, your finances are akimbo, I get it. Another way to help is to share these video practices. Send a link to a friend! Post it on social media! Help spread the word about nourishing movement and moving together apart.
