Seselelame is the West African term that describes our ability as humans to sense everything in our flesh and bones. Seselelame describes a sensory balance from internal and external sources, physical, mental, emotional — everything in the world. As movers, we use this holistic approach to sensing to move as a whole, as a system rather than a compilation of separate parts.

Given our focus on holistic, integrated, systemic movement this week, Bob Holroyd’s layered, varied global music seemed like the perfect fit. His delicious work has been described as a “collage of seemingly disparate styles and instrumentation producing ambient, global electronica, world chill, abstract dance and new age classical sound.” https://www.discogs.com/artist/25362-Bob-Holroyd/tracks He is one of my favorite artists to listen and move to and I recommend digging into his extensive library of music.
Below are our playlists for the week. If you’d like to listen to the music, you can find almost all the songs on Spotify (you can listen for free)! As always, please let me know if you have any questions about any of the music we dance to!

And friends, I am always ALWAYS looking for new music. Do you have a song that you love to move to or that moves you? I’d love to know what it is! Please respond in the comments below or email me at sjmnia@gmail.com!

Before the playlists, here is the scoop on a whole slew of great things happening this spring and summer!

act your age red and purpleSo far (since Sunday), 50 is just fine! Oddly, at 50 I am far younger than I ever was when I was, well, younger. It seems that every year, I am a little less anxious, a little more courageous. Over time, I’ve become less attached to other people’s opinions and more willing to wear silly pants. I’m figuring that at this rate, I’ll be downright infantile by the time I’m taking my last breath. Heaven knows what I’ll be wearing.

Here is the music from a week of Act Your Age as well as the Jenny Joseph poem I read and intend to live by. Except for the spitting, not sure I’ll ever get the hang of that.

Dance on. Shine on.

Warning by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

worrying woman 2Non-worrying and self-healing are about kindness:
• kindness to the body by moving joints with the intent to increase pleasure,
• kindness to the mind by putting attention on the present (rather than creating a smoking catastrophe of a future),
• kindness to the emotions by using the language of healing (“I am healing” rather than “I am sick” and “My foot is healing” rather than “My stupid foot is hurt.”).

My shoulder is healing from something (maybe too many Wheels in yoga) right now. So all week, I’ve been using the three-part practice of (1) noticing pain or discomfort (without spiraling into worry!), (2) stimulating that place with movement and then (3) noticing if it feels better or not. (If it feels even a little better for even a little while, that’s healing! Woo Hoo! And it’s worth celebrating these acts of kindness that we can offer ourselves any time.) I’ve noticed more pleasure in my shoulder and I also notice that healing is neither a linear nor a logical process. What feels good today, might not tomorrow, so self-healing requires a spirit of curiosity and experimentation. It’s all fascinating and worth doing. If you’ve had some healing happen this week, I’d love to hear about it.

In the meantime, here are the playlists for classes this week!  In particular, this week, it was great to go back to the very first routine I ever learned, Sanctuary, with the music of Adiemus:  Songs of Sanctuary by the London Philharmonic with vocals by Miriam Stockley.  It’s a beautiful body of work and I love sharing it.   (Huge thanks to Kristin vTh for transferring some old routines onto DVD so I (and we!) can revisit them.  So thank you for making that possible.)

As always, let me know how I can help more.
Love,
Susan

hard body cleansing punishmentAfter a week of playing with Soft Strength and the Power of Vulnerability (including teaching with my tummy showing!!), I’m ready for a weekend. So here are the playlist from the week plus three videos for your viewing pleasure:

(1) Brene Brown’s TED Talk on the Power of Vulnerability which I think should just be required viewing for everybody,

(2) Hallelujah by Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris because I love me some Justin and some Leonard Cohen (and a new student, Thomas, told me that Cohen wrote hundreds and hundreds of verses for this song!) and this version helps me breathe deeper

(3) And finally, Jimmy Fallon’s version of Ho Hey by the Chickeneers which has been making me giggle and snort all week (thank you, Susan Kaufman!!)

EnJOY!  Now get off your computer and go play in the sun! As always, let me know how I can help more,

Love,
