To honor and remember my only child, my sweet Chloe Rose, I invite you to join me in making that day your version of “the best day ever”. Want to have brownies for breakfast? Yes! Want to watch movies all day? Yes! Want to go for a walk after dinner? Yes! Want to read your kid(s) an extra bedtime story? Yes! Whatever makes you feel grateful to be alive, do it. letting it out is also letting it in guy 093015

Making sound, speaking up, saying what’s true. The practice of showing up and saying what you need to say has the magic of alchemy about it. Opening our mouths and letting out sound strengthens the body, sharpens the mind and releases the emotions. As we let out the energy inside us, we simultaneously let in the world.

Elizabeth Truslow 2015
This week we danced the rich relationship between the core and extremities, as well as the play of mind and body as we tune our awareness to that relationship. We also honored the passing of our friend and fellow Nia dancer, Elizabeth Truslow. Her kind radiance and bright, gentle spirit is a terrible loss. We will miss her tremendously.
Really, it all comes down to relationship. What we bring to our interactions with everyone and everything is all we can control. May you always bring what you want to bring.

Please join me there!

In Blackwater Woods by Mary Oliver

Look, the trees
are turning
their own bodies
into pillars

of light,
are giving off the rich
fragrance of cinnamon
and fulfillment,

the long tapers
of cattails
are bursting and floating away over
the blue shoulders

of the ponds,
and every pond,
no matter what its
name is, is

nameless now.
Every year
everything
I have ever learned

in my lifetime
leads back to this: the fires
and the black river of loss
whose other side

is salvation,
whose meaning
none of us will ever know.
To live in this world

you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.

generosity give arms wide open

“Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.”
― Simone Weil

It takes courage to give generously ~ money, gifts, but mostly ourselves. Are you willing to share yourself? To offer the gifts that only you can give? How generous are you willing to be?

Here’s an exquisite version of Boots of Spanish Leather, a song we danced to this week. As only Bob Dylan can, it tells the story of giving gifts and the only gift we really want from another.

Below is the music from the week ~ but first some announce-y type things:

My friend Tonya Ridings is teaching Kundalini Yoga at acac! As taught by Yogi Bhajan, PhD, Kundalini Yoga is the yoga of awareness. It consists of a series of physical and breathing exercises, chanting, mantra and meditation. This ancient technology heals and builds from the inside out. This class is appropriate for beginners. Wednesdays 1:30-3 at ACAC Downtown. Join Tonya and become your best self!

• It’s St Patrick’s Day next week! Join me on Monday (1045am acac Albemarle Square) and Tuesday (9am acac Downtown) for Firedance: the energetic, joyful Riverdance routine! Be sure to be wearin’ your green, donchaknow?

Nia Jam Friday, March 20, 545-7pm, at acac Downtown Group Ex Studio ~ Magic
Join Kate Aust, Anne Wolf and Loring Myles for the debut of Magic, a new routine by Ann Christiansen. The intent of this body of work is to allow you to see and find grounding and grace in your dance: G (grounded), R (relaxed), A(alert/aware), C (centered), E (energized). Bring a guest for free!

Mindful Movement & Metta at Buck Mountain Episcopal Church Parish Hall (4133 Earlysville Road, Earlysville VA ~ GPS takes you to the church, keep going a little bit to the white building just past the church yard), Friday, March 27, 2015, 6-715pm. Experience the No Words routine ~ all instrumental music and is taught in silence ~ interwoven with the words of lovingkindness or metta meditation. Returning to the meditation throughout the routine can help keep the mind focused and the heart open. Absolutely no experience is needed in movement or meditation to participate. The event is free to all with a request for donations to the Buck Mountain Wellness Ministry (suggested $12).

dance. sit. write. April 18, 845am-4pm at Buck Mountain Episcopal Church Parish Hall in Earlysville. Spend a day exploring the interconnection of movement, meditation and creativity. No experience in any of the three practices is needed. We’ll provide what you need including incredible food from Rebecca George’s Dragonfly Kitchen. Find all the details here and email me for a registration form (sjmnia@gmail.com). I’ve been working on this for years. I would love to share it with you. As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.

Joe L's 90th
This week we celebrated our friend Joe Lieberman’s 90th birthday as well as Principle 7’s invitation to make choices from love rather than fear.

All the music from classes is below!

As some of you know, I am both Nia instructor and writer. Today, one of my pieces was published on the (wonderful) site, Full Grown People. You can read it here. EnJoy.

Dance on. Shine on.

P.S. FOCUS POCUS MUSIC GIVE AWAY (MORE WAYS TO SCORE GREAT NIA MUSIC!): The offer is still good that I made in the Principle 2: Natural Time Post: email me (sjmnia@gmail.com) a picture of yourself wearing the 13-Moon Calendar color of the day (or wear the color to class and TELL me that you did it intentionally and didn’t just HAPPEN to) and I’ll send you (or hand it to you if you’re in Cville) a CD of official Nia music, either Sanjana or Dreamwalker or the Official Playlist for the Unofficial Guide! Another way to play: comment below (or on the Focus Pocus Facebook Page) about how you used any of the principles in your life recently! I’m only announcing this here so only Focus Pocus readers are in on this! [And even though it sounds like a McDonald’s contest disclaimer: good in the US only (unless you want me to email you the tunes); limit one per person; while supplies last; void where prohibited.]

PROJECT MICHAEL FRANTI TO CHARLOTTESVILLE: A COMMUNITY PROJECT OF GRATITUDE AND INVITATION

Rebecca has begun putting the 75 flags we have created into a long (it looks like more than 20 yard) strand of love. We’ll document it with photos and video, and maybe find a way to film us all dancing to one of his songs!

NIA TRAINER, JULIE WYLIE, COMING TO CHARLOTTESVILLE

We’re excited to support a weekend of classes and workshops with Nia Trainer, Julie Wylie now scheduled for September and a Nia White Belt early in 2015. Events will include lots of things for everyBODY as well as for belts wanting to reconnect to the principles and practices. More info coming soon.

IMG_20140506_153411066_HDRA Joy-filled week (especially with my friend and Nia colleague, Joy Brown visiting ~ that’s her snuggling up to TJ!) of curiosity. I’d love to hear how curiosity shifts your perspective and transforms the fearful critic!

Below is the music from this week’s classes (note the one unpublished song which I’m happy to share if you’re interested) as well as new information about a Nia trainer coming to Charlottesville! Mark your calendar.
