“Stay in your lane. Comparison kills creativity and joy.” ~ Brené Brown

Connection is essential to us all ~ especially now. And nothing kills real connection like comparison. As soon as I start holding you up and me down, as soon as I rate myself against someone else, as soon as I judge this as better than that, any chance at real connection is lost.

Instead, can we connect to ourselves and to each other and leave out the comparison? My yoga teachers would say, “Practice on your own mat” as a reminder that we are all doing our own practice, in our own bodies with our own experience, gifts and talents. To compare is not only absurd (since by definition we are each unique), it’s harmful to real relationships and leaves us feeling isolated and lonely.

Today’s Nourishing Movement practice is a chance to connect without comparison: to feel courage and to encourage, to pay attention to the front and back body, and to remember that we are not alone as we all practice in our own space and our own way. Find the video here.

Every day, every moment, we are supported. Our bodies are designed to support us from below and behind. And the people who have offered us kindness, inspiration and love are always with us, too. (Some of my allies that I bring with me are Maya Angelou, Mary Oliver, Michael Franti, Stephen Cope and just on the merits of his voice alone, James Earl Jones!) This week has been about trusting in and leaning into the strength and support that is always available – even that which we cannot see.

You can find this week’s playlists below. If you’d like to listen to them, you can find almost all the music on Spotify where you can listen for free! Put the music we dance together with other pieces that lift you up, calm you, and challenge you!

But first, here are a couple of things I know you want to know about:

* NOTE: I have many many more allies than these few powerhouses…they were all I could manage to fit in my illustration!

Your human body is designed to be supported and powered from below and behind.
Almost all of the largest muscles are on the back body.
We can think of this design as something we can both relax into and be propelled forward by.
I’ve written about this before and you can find more on this here and here.

In addition to our back-supported-and-powered physical bodies, ask yourself, “Who has my back?”
It’s always great to have people who stand with us through difficult times and circumstances but we can’t always have them there. In any situation, you can choose to bring along an ally of your choosing. It could be a person from your past: a beloved family member, a treasured teacher, or a writer or artist who touched your life. Whenever you are stepping into a situation in which you feel you need support, choose an ally to have your back. Two years ago would have been my grandfather’s 100th year and 25th birthday, he is an ally I take with me always.

Feel the physical support of your own amazing, beautifully-designed body.
Feel the mental, emotional and spiritual support of the allies you choose to bring with you.
They all have your back.
