As often happens when I set a focus for the week, it kept showing up right. in. my. face.
On Tuesday when I was teaching, I started the music and about half-way through the first song, my iPod just randomly stopped. “Oh,” says my brand-spanking-new iPod. “You think you know what’s going to happen?? Think again.”

And then a post by Leo Babauta of Zen Habits popped into my email box. It’s called Give Up Comfort and it speaks directly to our habit, addiction even, to controlling our circumstances. What I love is how he keeps talking about relaxing into whatever happens. Check it out here.

We used the intricate and multi-layered music of 1 Giant Leap to play with getting comfortable with uncertainty. It struck me that this music is like a collage — sometimes the pieces blend together like a painting and sometimes the connections are more distinct. This song is one of my favorites in all categories and is a great example of how a piece of music can take you on an unexpected journey.

Find all the week’s playlists below. If you’d like to listen to them, you can find almost all the music on Spotify where you can listen for free! Please let me know if you have any questions about any of the music we dance to!

But first, here are some things that are coming up in our dancing community:

be a peacemaker for 090216

So many thanks to Buck Mountain Episcopal Health & Wellness Ministry for hosting our special class on being a peacemaker in times of hatred. And thanks to all who came out to embody peace!

Below is the playlist from the evening but first, I promised to include links to the resources I referred to and the practices we did together.

Patricia Pearce’s article offered three ways of being a peacemaker
1. Stand in Solidarity with Those Under Attack
2. Love the Person Consumed by Hatred
3. Heal Your Own Mind
You can read her full excellent article here.

The practice of Tonglen is one we can do anytime we are faced with hatred, violence, or suffering of any kind. Imagine suffering as thick, hot, black sticky tar. Inhale and breathe in the black tar of suffering deep into your heart. Exhale, and let it explode and be burned away in the heat of the love and compassion in your heart. Inhale black suffering, exhale an explosion of loving white light.

This is an excellent talk on standing in solidarity with those who need our support and standing with our highest values in times of trouble: The Burning Church talk by Greg Thompson

If you have other resources on this topic, I would love to share them. Please feel free to contribute them to the Focus Pocus facebook page or email them to me at sjmnia@gmail.com. Thank you to all who create peace on earth by first taking the courageous step to create peace within.

Dance on. Shine on.

“We’ve all got things that hang on our back
Things that make us cool,
Things that make us whack,
Things that make us mad,
Things we wish we never had done.
But they’re just the things that make us real
Not the maps to guide where we go from here
The road twists and braids like hair
Until we all get there.”
– From Braided Hair by One Giant Leap Ft. Speech And Neneh Cherry

This week we focused on taking safe risks, finding the balance between challenge and healing with the intention of expanding into potential and breaking habits. On the musical menu were the second and third routines that I created in 2002 and 2003 ~ Dunyakan with the music of Afro Celt Sound System and 1 Giant Leap created by Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman when they traveled the world collecting music and words and then put it all together into a layered mosaic of awesomeness.

Both albums are worth a solid listen and you can do that by going to Spotify ! You can do that for free at Spotify ! Sign up for free, follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists ~ just click and listen! Both Afro Celt Sound System and 1 Giant Leap are rich examples of collaborative art that definitely takes risks.

Below are the playlists for the week, but first here are some groovy things you want to know about:

Two Essays Published by Elephant Journal!
I’m delighted and excited to say that elephant journal has picked up two of my essays this week. Whew! You can check out the ones about Intentions vs. Resolutions here and in preparation for MLK Day on Monday, the one about the wisdom of Martin Luther King, Jr. here. Help out a budding writer by reading and sharing!

Winter Nia Jam: Spiritual High with Anne, Mary Linn & Susan ~ Friday, January 22, 545-7pm at acac downtown
We are returning to the music and focus of a long-ago Nia routine originally created around 1995 by our teacher, Carlos Rosas. Together, we’ll create a new take on the music, movement and magic. Free for members and members can bring a friend for free!

leaves of graciasBoy HOWDY, I love starting Thanksgiving morning stretching my regular muscles and my gratitude muscles. As I await the arrival of my family and, of course, the roasting of the Brussels sprouts, my heart feels full of wonder about the work I am so lucky to do and the people I am so lucky to do it with. Whether we danced together this week or we only connected via the World Wide Internet Web, I am grateful for you.

May you be grateful that life is high adventure.
May you cultivate gratitude for everything without picking and choosing.
May you act on that gratitude and take it out into the world.
And may you say, “Sugar Pie, sit by me” at least once today!

Dance on. Shine on.

Taylor Statten Camps Graces

Morning Grace ~ Music by – Michael Head / Words by – Dr. A E. Haydon (1925-48 camper & staff)

Yesterday is now a memory,
Beneath tomorrow’s veil we cannot see,
The dawn brings unspoiled hours for work and play
Let us salute today.
May we be true to all the light we see,
Loyal and strong, that we may proudly be,
With joy and beauty lighting up the way,
Masters of life today.

Noon Hour Grace ~ Music by – Bill Scott / Words by – Dr. AE. Haydon

Thankful for life and all the joys of living,
For food and friends and nature’s bounteous giving,
We take our stand with free men everywhere,
Who spend their lives to make earth still more fair,
And spread life’s noblest gifts that all may share.

Evening Grace (Hymn Of Thanks) ~ Music by – Murray Adaskin / Words by – Dr. A E. Haydon

Let us give thanks that life is high adventure,
That unscaled heights await us, await us every day.
Let us be glad for work and love and laughter,
For loyal friends and comrades, and comrades on the way.
The evening shadows gather round the sunset,
This day will join our long lost yesterdays,
As builders of a better world we seek,
May we be wise to use each newborn day,
Let us give thanks.

thisUnbelievable. Doubt, certainty, certainty, doubt. Two weeks of being on call for jury duty and I did not have to go in, not even once. I’m either the luckiest person in Charlottesville, or I’ve used up all my luck for the next decade. It’s almost as if the Universe wanted to mess with me a little and then let me off the hook. In the meantime, while I wasn’t doing my civic duty, we were dancing to a bunch of different routines that we drew out of a hat — most of which I hadn’t done in their entirety in years.

On Monday and Tuesday, we focused on Certainty and Doubt and what each of them sounds, moves, feels like. On Wednesday, we focused on se soinge (which means, in French, “take care of yourself” … thank you, Candace!). Thursday, a meditation mantra: “It’s like this.” Always helpful for me (especially when revisting not-recently-visited routines) to remember to stay in my body and in the present since there is not a single pingle thing I can do about anything in the past or future. (Right, right, I knew that, I knew that.)

I had such a great time paddling around in the river of the unknown, I’m planning to do the whole pull-it-out-of-a-hat thing every so often: jury duty or no.

ANYway, below are the playlists from this week’s classes (including the routine names and choreographer). A couple music notes:  a bunch of Bob Holroyd’s extraordinary music came up this week, so if you’re not familiar with his work, it’s worth checking out.  And two of my favorite albums in the past 10 years:  Afro Celt Sound System’s Further in Time and 1 Giant Leap.  ACSS is a band that draws its (often changing) members primarily from the UK and Africa.  They blend their styles into a super-delicious smoothie for the ears.  And 1 Giant Leap.  A perfectly brilliant project of allowing poets and writers and musicians from around the world make art together without actually ever meeting.  Pure genius.  EnJOY.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or how I can help more.

Have fun. Dance on.
