Online Classes

NOTE: I see that Facebook has blocked some of the music for copyright issues. First, I apologize for this and please know that from now on I will only post practices with copyright free music. Second, I list the playlist below and on the blog so you can create it for yourself and move with me! Thanks for hanging with me while I build the airplane while I’m flying it. xoxo

Today we continue to explore finding the medicine for this moment by contemplating the six Quarantine Questions that I found on the Engine2 Instagram feed:

Daily Quarantine Questions:
1. What am I grateful for today?
2. Who am I checking in on or connecting with today?
3. What expectations of “normal” am I letting go of today?
4. How am I getting outside today?
5. How am I moving my body today?
6. What beauty am I either creating, cultivating or inviting in today?

Today’s class continues our practice with the physical anchors of moving our heads, hearts, hands and heels. The intent is to use these touch points in the body to ground, relax and move in different ways. As always, it’s about paying attention: the investment in yourself. You can find it on the Focus Pocus Facebook Page.

I continue to work on all aspects of offering online classes (what do you think of the “street legal” music yesterday? the camera’s better! a cordless mic might work soon! Fingers crossed!). Another option for you might be NiaTV which is an online service offering 30 days free access to Nia TV’s at-home dance workouts, podcasts, meditations, and exclusive livestream.
• To register, click here and start your free trial today.
• Please note: you will need to cancel your Nia TV account within 30 days to avoid being charged after the 30-day trial period.

UPDATED PRACTICES THIS WEEK
In order to solve the music copyright issues on YouTube, to address the issues with internet streaming and the fact that not everybody is on Facebook (and in the interest of simplicity!), at 9am every day I will post a recorded practice. This will allow people to access classes whenever they can do them, whether they are Facebookers or not and will be less stressful for your teacher to produce.

You can help to increase the interactivity and assure me that you are out there! PLEASE DO:
• leave comments on the Facebook videos and share them with friends
• subscribe to my YouTube channel (it’s FREE, of course), like, comment and share them
• subscribe, comment and share these blog posts
• email me at sjmnia@gmail.com with ideas and suggestions for what would be of the most help and support in these days

Today we continue to explore finding our own medicine for these strange days. In my sister’s house, she and her family are doing the 5 Hs every day:

• Head. Read a book, do school work, learn something (not news related)
• Heart. Exercise! Move in some way that you love and do some of it outside
• Hands. Make something! Craft, drawing, play music, make someone a card, make a nourishing meal
• Household. Do something to contribute to the wellness of the home, clean something, put things away, fold some laundry, empty the dishwasher
• Help. Send an email, text, or call someone over 65 or someone who is vulnerable in some way

I’ve adopted this approach and it’s helping me so much. When I start feeling sludgy or down, I scan the list and see which H I haven’t done yet. It shifts things almost immediately. How are you creating a new normal in these surreal times?

Today’s class is with all new, copyright legal music (see the schedule for weekly classes below) and is available for practice here. Subscribe to my YouTube Channel, leave a friendly comment, and hit Notifications so you know when I post new classes! And here’s today’s playlist:

TECH NOTE: We ended up going LIVE on the Focus Pocus Facebook pages which looks like it cut out after about 40 minutes. I’m looking for a way to post the whole class on Facebook but we may have to be happy with what we got! Stay tuned for more information about when/how classes will go up. BUT tomorrow, Tuesday, March 24, I’ll post a recorded class on my YouTube Channel at 9am! You can find that here. All new music (and maybe some familiar movement! :0)

My sister, Elizabeth is amazing. In this strange new world, she’s working from home as an executive for the Environmental Defense Fund with her husband, three teen aged kids and Archie the dog. In about 15 seconds, she realized that things could spiral into badness in a hurry. So she set up some structure. Every day, everyone in her family strives to do the 5 Hs:

Isn’t that genius? When I look back over the past week, my roughest days were the ones when I didn’t do something in each of these categories and the best days were when I did. What are you discovering is the best medicine for this moment?

Inspired by the 5Hs, our physical anchor today was on the head, heart, hands and heels. Today’s class was LIVE and a one-time experience (see the schedule for weekly classes below). Subscribe to my YouTube Channel, leave a friendly comment, and hit Notifications so you know when I post new classes! And here’s today’s playlist:

PRACTICES THIS WEEK
In order to solve the music copyright issues on YouTube, I will offer the following daily classes:
• Mondays and Wednesdays at 11am, I’ll teach a FACEBOOK Live class with “regular” music from the Focus Pocus Facebook page. After these classes, the video will not be available.
• Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9am, I’ll teach a YouTube class (probably recorded) with copyright-cleared music. After these classes, the video will be available for use any time.
• Fridays at 11am, I’ll teach a Dharma Dance practice (half guided, half unguided). I’ll announce ahead of time whether it will be a “one time only” experience or one that will be available afterward.
• Saturdays at 9am will be a self-guided practice of some kind in which you create your own playlist
• Sundays at 10am will be a restorative yoga practice.
We’ll see how this goes next week and go from there. Please let me know what is most helpful and supportive!

This weekend I’m taking a little time to work on the online teaching glitches and to rest a little. I am looking for another mic option, diving into finding music that is approved for use on YouTube (anybody have any ideas for copyright free music?) and taking a break from the steep learning curve of online teaching.

Today I offer a simple restorative yoga class that you can do with props you have at home (cat optional). As opposed to other yoga practices, restorative isn’t about stretching or strength but about fully letting go and relaxing. The practice is to create comfort and support so you can unwind and release. Any body can do it and no yoga experience is necessary. You can find the video here.

After you practice, please leave a comment below or on the Focus Pocus Facebook page and let me know how you feel! It helps all of us when we share our experiences and encourage each other to take care of ourselves kindly. Please do share what you notice.

I continue to work on all aspects of offering online classes (new music! better camera possibilities! a cordless mic! Fingers crossed!). Another option for you is NiaTV which is an online service offering 30 days free access to Nia TV’s at-home dance workouts, podcasts, meditations, and exclusive livestream.

• Please note: you will need to cancel your Nia TV account within 30 days to avoid being charged after the 30-day trial period.

HERE’S MY PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK
In order to solve the music copyright issues on YouTube, I am planning to offer the following daily classes:
Mondays and Wednesdays at 11am, I’ll teach a YouTube Live class with “regular” music. Just like taking a live class with me, this is a one-time-only opportunity. After these classes are over, the video will not be available.
Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9am, I’ll teach a YouTube class (it may be Live or recorded) with copyright-cleared, YouTube-approved music. After these classes are over, the video will be available for use any time.
Fridays at 11am, I’ll teach a Dharma Dance practice (half guided, half unguided). I’ll announce whether it will be a “one time only” experience or one that will be available afterward.
Saturdays at 9am will be a self-guided practice of some kind in which you create your own playlist and that video will be available afterward.
Sundays at 10am will be a restorative yoga practice with a video that will be available afterward.
What do you think? Let’s see how this goes and adjust from there. Please let me know what is most helpful and supportive!

SOOOO, HERE ARE NEXT WEEK’S OFFERINGS!
Monday Mar 23 11am ~ Dancing Water Live ~ Nourishing Movement (only available at this time)
Tuesday Mar 24 9am ~ Dancing Water Online ~ Nourishing Movement (available at this time and any time afterwards)

The bumpy ride of providing online classes continues! To make up for the Dharma Dance video that was blocked on Thursday, I did a live Do Over Dharma Dance class yesterday but that video was also partially blocked for music copyright issues. It has always been those issues that have kept me from doing classes online but my hope was that (a) in these extenuating circumstances, (b) given that our numbers aren’t high and (c) given that I am not charging for anything I’m offering, that we might slide under the radar. No such luck. In other news: the wireless mic we ordered arrived!…but it has the wrong attachments for our computer and won’t work. GAH.

I deeply apologize for not providing what I intend to offer. And please know that I am working diligently to create content that works on these platforms and is easeful to receive.

In that effort and in an act of self-care, I’m taking this weekend to find another mic option, to dive into finding music that is approved for use on YouTube (anybody have any ideas for copyright free music?) and to take a break from the steep learning curve.

I’m still with you, my friends. We still need to be moving and connecting, trusting and opening, engaging and letting go. In that spirit, today’s class is a self-guided or Ajna practice. The image above is my well-loved yoga mat that says:

Ajna: Listen to your inner instruction. We are all the answers.

Today, I offer a short video guide to creating your own movement practice. You can find it here. (There is no music, so I promise it will be there!)

This is the sample playlist that I love

Beauty & the East (Banco de Gaia Remix) 6:51 Bombay Dub Orchestra
Magalenha 3:39 Sergio Mendes
Surreal (Disc Two) 5:48 Free Radical
What I Be 4:45 Michael Franti & Spearhead
Wiarthul 5:55 Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu
Out Of The Silence 6:22 Aeoliah

You are welcome to use this or create your own playlist with music you love (one idea is to choose music you grooved to when you were in high school ~ research shows that dancing to music from your youth increases youthfulness in body and mind!).

After doing the practice, please do leave a comment below or on the Focus Pocus Facebook page and let me know how it goes for you! It is a gift to all of us to keep the connection and encouragement flowing so I look forward to hearing from you.

I continue to work on all aspects of offering online classes (new music! better camera possibilities! a cordless mic! Fingers crossed!). Another option for you might be NiaTV which is an online service offering 30 days free access to Nia TV’s at-home dance workouts, podcasts, meditations, and exclusive livestream.

• Please note: you will need to cancel your Nia TV account within 30 days to avoid being charged after the 30-day trial period.

TOMORROW, Sunday, March 22, 2020, Restorative Yoga Practice
Movement is healing, yes. And we desperately need stillness and real rest. On Sunday, I’ll offer a calming, deeply relaxing restorative yoga class that you can do with props that you have around the house. The video will go live here on Sunday at 10am. https://youtu.be/JPWoL8xI58s Grab a mug of tea, some pillows and blankets and let yourself unwind.

What does your inner teacher tell you that you need today? Listen to her. She is wise beyond measure.
Please stay in touch.
Until soon, my friends!

Turns out, teaching classes online has a steep learning curve. After a week of teaching daily, I’ve bumped up against at least a dozen confounding issues that make me want to put my head on my keyboard. But I read something this week that has been helpful:

The most useful form of patience is persistence.
Patience implies waiting for things to improve on their own.
Persistence implies keeping your head down and continuing to work when things take longer than you expect.
~ James Clear

When things haven’t gone as I thought they would this week, I keep thinking about persistence. And yesterday, when I recorded the Dharma Dance class, uploaded it… and it didn’t work, I decided it was a chance to play with another version of the same class today.

SO, today’s class is a FRIDAY DO OVER: The Dharma Dance experience that nobody saw (except for Phoenix the cat who slept in the sun the whole time) was transformed into something new. As I said yesterday, Dharma Dance is a movement experience I created 10 years ago that combines guided and unguided movement with the idea of breaking habit and pattern to reveal our unique presence, true nature and clearest insight.

This true nature is what yogis call dharma. The sensation of living in alignment of our dharma is one of aliveness and flow state that is engrossing, fascinating and timeless. While all of us have at least had a few experiences of the aliveness of living our dharma, the intent of Dharma Dance is to explore how we can train ourselves to recognize the experience of flow and seek it out and sustain the sensation.

Today’s class, which you can find here, is in two parts: Body as Student and Body as Teacher. The first half, Body as Student, is guided, choreographed movement designed to take us into movements that break our conditioned patterns and burn new neural pathways that open more movement possibilities. The second half, Body as Teacher, is when we think less and feel more, let the body lead and get out of our own way. My hope is that the combination of the two reveals new ways of showing up, connecting body and mind and being precious you.

I shared a Compassion In The Time Of Coronavirus Meditation from Jack Kornfield on Insight Timer. You can find it here.

May you be held in compassion
May you be safe and well, healed and protected
May your struggles, fears and suffering be eased
May you live with a compassionate and peaceful heart

Please find the playlist is below. And you can find the video from today’s class here.

I continue to work on the technical side of offering online classes (new music! better camera possibilities! a cordless mic! Yay!).

TOMORROW, Saturday, March 21, 2020, Ajna: A Do It Yourself Practice
After teaching every day for a week in uncharted territory, I am going to take a day off. Tomorrow, you will find a recorded offering of a DIY practice that you can do any day you need 30 minutes of movement to reconnect with you. I suggest putting together a playlist of 5-6 songs that you love for this practice. One great approach is to pick songs that you loved when you were in high school (and if you’re in high school now, pick songs from elementary school or middle school!) I’ll also suggest a playlist in the video notes. 🙂 The video will go up at 8am Eastern tomorrow.

Sunday, March 22, 2020, Restorative Yoga Practice
Movement is healing, yes. And we desperately need stillness and real rest. On Sunday, I’ll offer a calming, deeply relaxing restorative yoga class that you can do with props that you have around the house.

Remember, friends, movement is medicine. Connection is, too. Sunshine and fresh air and gratitude all heal in profound ways. Make sure you are getting healthy doses of them all.
Please stay in touch.
Until soon, my friends!

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do that. Because the world need people who have come alive.” – Howard Thurman

Apparently, our approach of gathering on a live stream is not unique since today the Internet was too slow and unstable to sustain our feed! Instead, I recorded our class from Dancing Water. [NOTE ON FRIDAY: ANNND that didn’t work! So I did DO OVER FRIDAY and retaught the class live. You can find it here.]

Today’s class was Dharma Dance: a movement experience I created about 10 years ago that is a combination of guided and unguided movement. I haven’t taught this form in a while and it was a treat to return to it.

One of the most essential human experiences is that of living our dharma: our true nature and purpose. The sensation of living in alignment of our dharma is one of aliveness and flow state that is engrossing, deeply fascinating and timeless. While all of us have at least had a few experiences of the aliveness of living our dharma, I endeavor to explore how we can train ourselves to recognize the experience of flow and seek it out and sustain the sensation.

Dharma Dance is an experience designed to help us identify, experience and sustain the sensation of aliveness that is associated with living in alignment with our true natures. The movements in Dharma Dance intend to break habit and repattern the nervous system — and reconnect you with You and your essence. Its intent is to give everyBody a chance to relax and trust in their own dharma or essence, and listen to the wisdom and guidance that is always available.

I am working diligently on the technical side of offering online classes with some better camera possibilities in the works and a cordless mic is on its way soon! Yay!

When we are in scary times, sometimes it’s impossible to even KNOW what might be helpful or supportive. I’d love to hear what would be most helpful to you and if you just don’t know, breathe, it’s totally fine. I’ll just keep experimenting!

TOMORROW, Friday, March 20, 2020, Pop-Up Class?!
I’m not sure what’s going to happen tomorrow (when am I ever?) but my intention is to record a class and post it…sometime. If you subscribe to my Channel and ask for notifications, you’ll get a note when I put it up! And please leave a comment and tell a friend about what we’re doing together! I’ll also leave a link on the Focus Pocus Page here. See you soon!

The body is your student and your teacher. In both ways, the body is the gateway to your dharma.
Please stay in touch.
Until soon, my friends!
