Online Classes

“You helped me smooth my fur out.”

Last Thursday, I took an online restorative yoga class with my teacher, Shandoah Goldman (find her on Instagram here). It was wonderful … and I didn’t know how much I’d needed it. I was utterly frazzled and scattered and I didn’t even realize it.

Is that true for you, too?

After that class was over, I decided to offer two restorative classes a week to remind all of us of the importance of slowing down, deeply resting and letting our nervous systems reset.

Resilience is our body’s way. Today’s practice invites us to get back to that resilience. It is simple and a little shorter (feel free to pause the recording and stay in any pose as long as you like) and I hope will offer you the same fur smoothing. You can find the video here.
You’ll need a few simple props:
– carpet or blanket on the floor where you’re practicing
– two firm pillows (I use two from my sofa)
– one standard bath towel
– one small blanket
– eye covering (scarf, towel or face cloth)
– decaffeinated tea or water
May you be safe and well, friends. Please let me know how it goes for you!

Today’s Nourishing Movement practice continues our exploration of the sensation of resilience. Our very bodies are designed to be resilient: balancing tough and flexible, tenacious and mobile, strong and fluid. The more we embody these sensations in our movement, the more access we have to them in other aspects of our lives.

Case in point: my mic battery died at about the 33 minute mark which is PERFECT for practicing resilience It gives all of us a chance to trust our own strength and suppleness and to move with our own wisdom (PLUS it gives me a chance to face my perfectionism head-on). AND below the playlist are some notes to refer to for those last songs! Thank you for your patience, friends as I figure all this out. Find the video here.

Resilience has two parts of its definition:
re·sil·ience /rəˈzilyəns/ noun
1. the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.
2. the ability of a substance or object [or person!] to spring back into shape; elasticity.

Our practice today invites movement with the sensations of resilience: both tenacity, strength and toughness and also elasticity, mobility and fluidity. Too much toughness and we become brittle and easily shattered. Too much elasticity and we collapse. Move with me to find the resilient balance.

A simple, deeply nourishing restorative yoga practice using props you have at home. Take time to let your nervous system unwind and let go in “fancy relaxation.”

Here’s what you’ll need:
• a yoga mat, blanket or carpeted floor
• two bath towels
• two firm pillows
• a small blanket
• a chair, sofa or bed that is about as high as your thigh is long
• a cup of decaffeinated tea (or water!)

We are trained to accomplish and do. This practice reconnects us to the gift of not doing.

Today’s nourishing movement is a self-guided or (in Sanskrit) Ajna practice. My well-loved yoga mat has words at the top that say:

Ajna: Listen to your inner instruction. We are all the answers.

Ajna is sometimes translated as “perceive” or “beyond wisdom” and is the word used for the energy center of intuition ~ the Third Eye Chakra (located between the eyebrows). Part of the reason we practice together is to strengthen our own “wisdom muscles” so that we can access our skill whenever we need it. In that spirit, I offer a short guide to creating a simple movement practice of your own. You can find it here.

I hope you will create a playlist of 5-6 songs that you love (perhaps from your youth) but if you’d like you can use this e sample playlist that I delight in moving to:

Ajna ~ Self-Guided Practice ~ Sat, Mar 28 2020
Rama Dasa 5:11 daVinci
Artichoke Funk 5:56 Zeb
Make Me Believe 5:23 Above & Beyond, Daniel Kandi
Shining Light 4:32 Annie Lennox
Summer Morning Rain 3:52 Tierra Negra and Muriel Anderson
A Sound Meditation 5:30 Benjamin Iobst
Whatever you choose, make it music that sings to your soul.

I continue to work on all aspects of offering online classes (new music! better camera possibilities! a cordless mic! Fingers crossed!). Today’s class is a Dharma Dance Do Over Do Over! Last week, as I was still understanding the copyright restrictions on YouTube, my first two recordings of this class were blocked. So I reworked the class with new music annnnd here is the Do Over Do Over!

Dharma Dance is a movement experience I created that combines guided and unguided movement with the idea of breaking habit and ingrained pattern to reveal our unique presence, true nature and clearest insight.

This true nature is what yogis call dharma. The sensation of living in alignment of our dharma is one of aliveness and flow state that is engrossing, fascinating and timeless. While all of us have at least had a few experiences of the aliveness of living our dharma, the intent of Dharma Dance is to explore how we can train ourselves to recognize the experience of flow and seek it out and sustain the sensation.

Today’s class, which you can find here, is in two parts: Body as Student and Body as Teacher.

Body as Student
The first half, Body as Student, is guided, choreographed movement designed to invite movement that breaks our conditioned patterns and burn new neural pathways that open more movement possibilities. Feelings of awkwardness or confusion (you’ll see me have those experiences while I’m teaching!) are totally normal and part of the process of releasing habit! It’s not about doing it right, it’s about finding new ways of doing it.

Body as Teacher
The second half, Body as Teacher, is when we think less and feel more, let the body lead and get out of our own way. I invite you to move to each of the songs with a different focus:
• the first song (Ready for Freddy) with an emphasis on your soft tissue, muscles, organs and fluid movement,
• the second (All I Can Do Is This) focused on bones and angular, rhythmic patterns,
• the third (Bloody Tears) move with energy, imagination, emotion and expression, as if you were the firings of your brain and nervous system (this one might be a little messy and that’s ok),
• the fourth song (Hypnothis) focus on air, lightness and space,
• the fifth (Simmering), play with gravity, up & down and ultimately grounding on the floor,
• and the sixth (There Are Many Different Kinds of Love) rest in stillness and let all the movement integrate.
My hope is that the combination of the two reveals new ways of showing up, connecting body and mind and being precious you.

Until soon, my friends!

Today, more on the medicine for this moment. I’ve been contemplating the six Quarantine Questions that I found on the Engine2 Instagram feed:

Daily Quarantine Questions:
1. What am I grateful for today?
2. Who am I checking in on or connecting with today?
3. What expectations of “normal” am I letting go of today?
4. How am I getting outside today?
5. How am I moving my body today?
6. What beauty am I either creating, cultivating or inviting in today?

This class continues with the physical anchors of moving and sensing our heads, hearts, hands and heels. The intent is to use these touch points in the body to ground, relax and move in different ways. As always, it’s about paying attention: the investment in yourself.

Today’s class is with all new, copyright-legal music (see the schedule for weekly classes below) and is available for practice here. Subscribe to my YouTube Channel, leave a friendly comment, and hit Notifications so you know when I post new classes! And here’s today’s playlist:

UPDATED PRACTICES THIS WEEK
In order to solve the music copyright issues on YouTube, to address the issues with internet streaming and the fact that not everybody is on Facebook (and in the interest of simplicity!), at 9am every day I will post a recorded practice. This will allow people to access classes whenever they can do them, whether they are Facebookers or not and will be less stressful to produce.

You can help to increase the interactivity and assure me that you are out there! PLEASE DO:
• leave comments on the Facebook videos and share them with friends
• subscribe to my YouTube channel (it’s FREE, of course), like, comment and share them
• subscribe, comment and share these blog posts
• email me at sjmnia@gmail.com with ideas and suggestions for what would be of the most help and support in these days
