Online Classes

When life feels scary or uncertain, my mind loves to play the perfection game: if I do everything just right and don’t make any mistakes, then I’ll be safe and loved and everything will go the way I want it to. In the perfection game, I put lots of energy into eating just the right things and washing my hands just the right way and trying to get everything just right. And guess what? I still feel scared and uncertain.

Perfectionism is just fear in fancy shoes and a mink coat. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert

Today’s Dharma Dance practice moves with the fear (whether in dress-up clothes or not) and offers a chance to let go of doing it right. Instead, integrate body and mind by moving in new ways (Body as Student) and then allowing the body to lead (Body as Teacher). Kick off the fancy shoes and the fur coat and move from the inside out. You can find the video here.

Fear and love are big emotions that can be downright unwieldy when they get intense. Mindfulness practice is a way of bringing an approach of friendliness and welcome to love, fear and whatever else arises.

In particular, restorative yoga invites us to learn how to relate to our habitual tension with that same sense of friendliness. This practice uses just a couple of props that you can find around the house to open and soften through the pelvis, chest and head – where our emotions reside. You can do this whole practice or any one of the poses whenever you need them. You can find the video here.

Props for the Practice:
~ 2 thick bath towels
~ eye covering (optional)
~ tea or water (optional)

As always, the Moon River Restorative classes use simple props and supports that you can find around the house. On Wednesdays, we will use minimal props – just a couple of towels or blankets, for example – for a practice that can be done anywhere at any time. On Sundays, we will use nesting props – still all things from around the house but more of them! Today’s practice is a minimal prop practice.

Fear and love are two of the most primal human emotions and we need them both. Our mindfulness practice is about allowing them to be present, even welcoming them with friendliness. I can’t banish fear – it’s impossible – but I can let it be present without running the show.

Elizabeth Gilbert, in her book Big Magic says fear can be in the car but it can’t drive. She writes,

The less I fight my fear, the less it fights back. If I can relax, fear relaxes, too.

I imagine taking the temper tantruming bundle of my fears, zipping them into a soft snowsuit and buckling them into a car seat. They may cry and yell for a while but if I just keep going, moving where I want to go while murmuring kindness to them (“I know, sweetie. I know. It’s really hard.”), that bundle of terror will eventually calm down, stare out the window and count license plates.

Today’s Nourishing Movement class anchors on the core of the body where these core emotions reside. Moving with awareness and friendliness allows fear and love and whatever else arises to move through. No need to fight it or resist or kick it out of the car. Wrap it with kindness, buckle it in and move with it. You can find the video here.

Many teachers remind me that every choice – every single choice – either comes from love or fear. I resisted the heck out of this idea for a while (still do, sometimes) — how could it be that simple? But when I really pay attention, I can feel it. Even if the action is the same (say, eating a salad for lunch), when I do it out of love (as in, I totally LOVE how delicious and nourishing this is!) it feels completely different than if I do it out of fear (as in, I better eat a salad or I’ll gain weight.).

We’re all always dancing between fear and love. They are the big, primal human emotions. And fear can be easy to be swept up in. The more we’re aware of what fear and love feel like in the body, the more we can, welcome them both with friendliness and compassion. With awareness, we can as Dr. Vivek Murthy says, “tilt the world toward love.”

Today’s Nourishing Movement practice offers guided movement anchored on the core of the body where the strong emotions of love, fear and friendliness all reside. You can find the video here.

For a great look at fear and how to welcome it in, check out the latest Embrace Your Wierd podcast with Lisa Jakub. You can find it here.

The feeling that kept coming to me in the first restorative yoga class I took from my teacher, Shandoah Goldman, was that of relaxing into a soft raft that was floating on water. The simultaneous sensation of letting go deeply into the support and effortlessly floating is one that my body~mind comes back to again and again.

This short, simple series with just a few props* invites that dynamic of sinking and floating. I call it Lie Down with Logs (Towel Logs!) and you can find the video here.

Props for the Practice:
• carpet ~ blanket ~ yoga mat (or any combination so the floor is soft and forgiving)
• 2 thick bath towels
• 1 blanket
• eye covering (a small hand towel or thick scarf is recommended)
• a cat companion (optional)
• tea or water (optional)

If you like music while you are practicing, I recommend Floating by James Anthony Walker on Insight Timer.

* I’m exploring using fewer and simpler props and I’d love to know how these series work for you! Please let me know what props work best for you: what you do and do not have access to and what feels best. I’d love to create practices that address our practice-at-home needs!

It is our nature to sink and float. Our bodies are designed to be in this up and down interplay with gravity. And it is the nature of our minds and hearts, particularly in times of communal stress and predictable unpredictability, to sink and rise, too.

Sinking and floating can be a practice that we engage in intentionally, even if it feels awkward and uncomfortable. Today’s ajna* practice offers three ways to practice with sink and float. Find the video here.

3 Ways to Sink + Float

1. Sink + Float in the Body. As you move through your day, look for ways to sink down into your legs, go onto the floor, and whatever you’re doing, really sink into the support that is always under you. Float up and stretch, reach for things in high places. Grocery store visits are great opportunities to practice this – buy things that aren’t at eye-level!

2. Feel the Sink + Float. As your heart and mind rise and fall during the day, allow yourself to feel it. When you read a story that makes your heart sink, allow it to sink in before you move on to the next thing. When you smell honeysuckle or hear a wood thrush, give yourself a moment to feel the float and lift that beauty always offers. We are conditioned to skim over the surface of feelings. Instead, let them have their way with you.

3. Visualize the healing of Sink + Float. This visualization was inspired by a comment in an On Being interview with David Steindl-Rast. Imagine carefully, lovingly, one at a time, placing worry, fear, sorrow and heartache into a beautiful old suitcase. Then drop the suitcase into a deep, still, clean, clear lake. Watch it sinksinksink slowly through the water until it bumps onto the bottom. And then watch and see what floats bubbles lifts up from your grief to the surface.

A gentle reminder, friends. Sinking and floating can be intense for body, mind, and heart. Go slowly. Practice a little at at time. Take care of yourself. If you need support – whether that is a chair, a hand or ear of a friend, or a licensed mental health professional – get it and use it.

And as always, I love to hear from you. Reach out and let me know how the sink and float feels.

* Ajna is a Sanskrit word that means inner-knowing or intuition. Ajna practice is an opportunity to be your own teacher.

“Your heart is the size of an ocean. Go find yourself in its hidden depths.” ~ Rumi

We are always sinking and floating. These two dynamics are happening all the time in body, mind and heart. In today’s All Out All You Dance Party, I offer a sea of sound and some light guidance for you to move in ways that feel just right for you just now. Use this practice to find yourself in the hidden depths of sensation and presence. Find the video here.

A simple practice to assist in dropping into sensation are AAA: Arrive, Awareness, and Anchor. Whenever you feel you’ve wandered off from presence, let yourself arrive again, choose to land in the experience. Then intentionally open your awareness, and then anchor that awareness. For today’s practice, we anchor on the sensations of and balance between sink and float. But other anchors could be your breath, sound, sensations, thoughts, or whatever allows you to steady yourself…until you wander away again!

Sink into safety, relaxation, connection. Float into openness, perspective, possibility. I’d love to hear how it goes for you. Please leave a comment below.
