“If you do not deliberately form good habits, then unconsciously you will form bad ones. You are the kind of person you are because you have formed the habit of being that kind of person, and the only way you can change is through habit.”

Nearly half of everything we do every day is habit. Just knowing that makes it clear how powerful habits are whether they are examined or not. Mindfulness allows us to shine the light on what we are doing habitually and invites us to ask if those things are helpful and beneficial. Do they feel good before, during or after?

Today’s Dharma Dance practice steps directly into mindfully moving with habitual patterns and allowing ourselves to feel the awkwardness of breaking them and the possibilities that open when we do. The first half of the experience that we call Body as Student offers guided movement designed to break habit. The second half, Body as Teacher, invites us to let the body lead, to think less and feel more and see where that takes us. Please find the video here.
