Fear

The word metta is from Pali, the language spoken by the Buddha. It is a multi-layered word that can be translated as “loving-kindness,” “benevolence,” “non-violence,” and “goodwill.” My favorite definition, though, is “friendliness.” This week’s Dancing Water Daily theme is Fear Love & Friendliness so our ajna* (self-guided) practice is a metta meditation…and action. Traditionally, metta meditations are a series of statement that are repeated for the benefit of the self and other groups of people and beings. You can create statements of your own but today, we use these:

May I / You / All Beings be safe and well.
May I / You / All Beings be happy and content.
May I / You / All Beings be healthy and strong.
May I / You / All Beings be peaceful and at ease.

This meditation alone, this turning of the heart toward everyone is a powerful practice. Today, we expand it out to offer acts of metta friendliness in order to “tilt the world toward love.” I would be so glad to hear how you implement this so please share in the comments below!

* Ajna is a Sanskrit word that means inner-knowing or intuition and we use it as an invitation to be your own teacher.
