Fri, Jun 19, 2020 ~ Dancing Water Practice ~ Dharma Dance: Paradox & Contradiction

The world is shifting. My world. Your world. All of it. As always, it’s unclear what will stay and what will burn away, what will crumble and what will stand. As it shifts, I want to move with it and make space for what needs to happen. I am, then, shifting my online teaching schedule from seven classes a week to four: Nourishing Movement on Mondays, Dharma Dance or All Out All You Movement Parties on Fridays, and Restorative Yoga on Wednesdays and Sundays (Minimal Props and Nesting Props, respectively). For my own health and energy and for the space to allow change to happen, let’s keep moving together while we are apart.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I change.” ~Carl Rogers

Paradox and contradiction. On the surface they can look the same but they feel different.

A paradox is something that on the surface seems absurd, like it doesn’t even make sense but under clear-eyed scrutiny, it is truth. So I can be both fierce and kind. I can be both stable and mobile. I can be both grounded and expansive.

A contradiction is something in opposition within a system (a body, a mind, a company, a culture, etc.) that usually we don’t even notice but under clear-eyed scrutiny, it is truth. A contradiction is something out of alignment. It’s taking an anti-depressant and drinking alcohol. It’s supporting anti-animal cruelty and eating meat. It’s being pro-environment and flying internationally. (All things I have done in my life.)

Paradox and contradiction: we are all a bundle of both. Today’s Dharma Dance practice is a blend of guided movement (Body as Student) in which we notice habit and play with unfamiliar patterns and unguided movement (Body as Teacher) in which we let the body lead and notice where it goes. As you move, feel the difference between paradox and contradiction and the truth that both reveal. Find the video here.
