Tue, Jun 2, 2020 ~ Dancing Water Daily ~ Nourishing Movement: Fear, Love & Friendliness


Fear and love are two of the most primal human emotions and we need them both. Our mindfulness practice is about allowing them to be present, even welcoming them with friendliness. I can’t banish fear – it’s impossible – but I can let it be present without running the show.

Elizabeth Gilbert, in her book Big Magic says fear can be in the car but it can’t drive. She writes,

The less I fight my fear, the less it fights back. If I can relax, fear relaxes, too.

I imagine taking the temper tantruming bundle of my fears, zipping them into a soft snowsuit and buckling them into a car seat. They may cry and yell for a while but if I just keep going, moving where I want to go while murmuring kindness to them (“I know, sweetie. I know. It’s really hard.”), that bundle of terror will eventually calm down, stare out the window and count license plates.

Today’s Nourishing Movement class anchors on the core of the body where these core emotions reside. Moving with awareness and friendliness allows fear and love and whatever else arises to move through. No need to fight it or resist or kick it out of the car.
