Tue, May 26, 2020 ~ Dancing Water Daily ~ Nourishing Movement: Sink + Float

The body sinks and floats. Moving the body up and down improves strength and flexibility, and heart and lung health. In gravity, sinking and floating depend on each other. One part sinks and another floats. There is no floating without sinking and no sinking without floating.

But these days it’s not just my body that is sinking and floating, it’s my mind and heart, too. My heart sinks after reading a headline. My mind floats in distraction. My awareness sinks into what is happening. My imagination floats into a wider, more creative perspective. Sinking and floating are happening simultaneously all the time. There is not one without the other.

In today’s Nourishing Movement practice, we’ll allow ourselves to ride on the waves of sinking and floating and notice the sensations in body, mind and heart. Find the video here.

If you are feeling anxious and tender as you practice, I offer this image (inspired by On Being interview with David Steindl-Rast): imagine dropping worry, fear and grief into a deep, still, clear lake. Let it slowly sink to the bottom and then see what floats to the surface.
