“I noticed when I believed by thoughts, I suffered, but when I didn’t believe them, I didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Freedom is as simple as that.” ~ Byron Katie
This morning, I was caught in a thought storm. A deluge of perceptions, assumptions, judgments and stories dumped on me and took my breath away. Even with decades of body~mind practice under my feet, even with the awareness of how my thoughts were hurting me, even when I could see that (at least maybe) my thoughts weren’t true, the storm undid me.
What happens for you when you get caught in a thought storm? What helps you get under cover so you can look out at what’s pouring down with some perspective? For me, this morning, it was a combination of moving my body, being outside in the sun and wind and talking through what was going on in my head with a trusted friend.
Over and over, I’m reminded that the more I am present, the more skill and wisdom I have to get myself out of the storm.
Today’s practice is a series of restorative yoga postures that focus on the ankles, low back and neck…and on the space between you and your thoughts. Using supportive props from around the house, this practice will encourage your body to unwind and your nervous system to calm. Find the video here.
Props for the Practice:
• carpet ~ blanket ~ yoga mat (or all three!) on the floor
• 2 bath towels
• 2 firm pillows
• a stack of books or a yoga block
• a small piece of wall space near the floor (optional)
• a strap, long scarf or belt (optional)
• eye covering (optional)
• tea or water (optional)
If you find yourself in a thought storm, I recommend going from a restorative practice to exploring Byron Katie’s practice around parsing thought called The Work. I’ve found it to be healing and helpful. You can find it here.
