Sat, May 9, 2020 ~ Dancing Water Daily ~ Ajna: Overwhelm Inquiry

Everybody feels overwhelmed sometimes…but do you notice it? I know now that for years I was feeling overwhelmed and didn’t even know it.

The world is too f***ing big. Sometimes, I can’t even carry myself through all the love and fear. ~ Sherman Alexie, You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me

It may seem counter-intuitive, but the practice of recognizing the experience of overwhelm is the first and essential step in making choices about how to move through it.

Today’s Dancing Water Daily Ajna (or Self-Guided) practice is an inquiry into feelings of overwhelm and some strategies to respond to them. The practice was inspired by Caroline Stewart’s meditation, Overcoming Overwhelm and Episode 44 of the Pretty Spiritual podcast.

Approaching overwhelm with compassion and curiosity allows us not just to bring the feelings into awareness but to see what is under them so those can be brought into awareness too. This is a practice you can use as a meditation, a journaling exercise, or a conversation with a friend. Find the video here.

Some of the inquiry questions for this practice:
• What is the physical sensation of overwhelm in your body?
• Why might you be feeling overwhelmed? What happened or is happening?
• How has it served me in the past to be overwhelmed?
• When I’m overwhelmed, what stories do I tell myself and what beliefs about myself do I hold?
As the Pretty Spiritual podcast hosts remind us, your internal environment becomes your external environment. So the more we dive into our internal experience the more we can shift the external. Let me know how you use the practice and what you uncover!

Help me to continue to create Dancing Water Daily practices! No matter how far apart we are physically, we are all connected. The path that we all move along together is held by an Invisible Net of Love that is always there even if we can’t see it. The Dancing Water Daily practices is my thread in that net. Please support my work by offering a donation so I can keep creating these practices for you. With your generous support, I can continue to invest in making these classes available to anyone who can benefit. Please click here https://paypal.me/SusanMcCulley?locale.x=en_US to be part of the Dancing Water Daily Net of Love. And please “Send to a Friend” to avoid PayPal fees! Suggested donation: $5 a class or $15 a week ~ and truly, any amount helps enormously.

A special heartfelt thank you to all who have offered financial support toward the continued creation of these practices. Your generosity makes classes available to even more people and that is a huge gift. I am deeply grateful.

This week, get a gift of gratitude: when you make a Dancing Water Daily donation of $10 or more, I will send you (or whoever you like) one of my books, Buddha Cat: Learning Presence, Awareness & Self Care from a Teacher Who Sometimes Barfs on the Bed or Octabusy: How To Let Go in a Sea of Doing. I can’t wait to put one in the mail for you!

Shout outs to this week’s generous donors Susan Snyder and Lynn Pribus! A thousand thanks, friends! Together we can extend this Net of Love to reach everyone who needs it.

AND if, like me, your finances are akimbo, I get it. Another way to help is to share these video practices. Send a link to a friend! Post it on social media! Help spread the word about nourishing movement and moving together apart.
