Sat, May 2, 2020 ~ Dancing Water Daily ~ Ajna (Self-Guided) Practice: 3 Tools for Connection

Happy Saturday! Today’s practice is an Ajna or Self-Guided Practice in which I offer three tools to deepen your connection to your physical, mental and emotional self. As we discover over and over, the more tuned in and aware of my own experience, the more I am able to connect with others.

These three tools could be the most generous thing you do for the people you love and care for.

RESOURCES for 3 Tools for Connection to Body, Mind & Heart

1. Body ~ Counter Movements
If you’ve been doing something for a while with your body, do the opposite
• If you’ve been at your desk, in the car or on the couch (contracting hip flexors and chest) do some active or passive stretches to lengthen the contracted places. (NOTE: Restorative Yoga is a great way to allow the body to unwind itself. Check out Dancing Water Dailys on Wednesdays and Sundays.)
• If you’ve been sitting, stand (or walk or move or lie on the floor)
• If you’ve been moving around a lot, stop, be still.
• If you’ve been eating a lot, stop eating for a while (and vice versa)
• You get the idea…

2. Mind ~ Thought Watching
• You are not your thoughts.
• It is a practice to create some space between you and what you are thinking.
• Watch what you think and how you interact with yourself and others in your head
• The (free) Insight Timer App has a variety of thought-watching practices that are helpful to me.
This one is a short clear simple practice for mediators of all ages

3. Heart ~ Emotional Intelligence and Articulation
• For most of us (me definitely included), our emotional vocabulary is largely limited to “mad,” “sad,” “glad,” and “afraid.” Beyond that, we can rarely identify what we are feeling.
• The more easily I can articulate my own emotional state, the more easily I can make choices around my own emotional state (do I want to stay here or shift?) and the more easily I can communicate my experience to people around me (e.g., “I feel discouraged about this project.”)
• Dr. Marc Brackett, the author of the book Permission to Feel, has developed a simple and helpful app called The Mood Meter which offers a way of building emotional vocabulary, gain insights about your inner life, and track how your emotional state might be shifted and how it might be influencing your decisions. I’ve been using it for a week and I love how it’s connecting me to me.
