The two main reasons I started the Dancing Water Daily online classes was to offer both movement and connection in a time when opportunities for both might be limited.
Movement and connection.
The movement part is obvious since I guide movement classes every day but what about the connection part? How do we connect with each other when we are physically so disconnected? Before I teach every day, I intentionally think of our community and conjure up faces to dance with, but the truth is, I feel lonely teaching up there sometimes.
In her great podcast, Unlocking Us, Brene Brown recently had a conversation with former Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy about loneliness and connection. The fascinating interview spoke to our situation in these isolated days when I sometimes feel connected when I’m alone and lonely when I’m on a Zoom call with lots of people. Dr. Murthy makes clear that loneliness and connection is not just about the people around us. It starts with each of us. He said “the foundation for connecting with others is a connection with yourself.”
We know this from the practice we do together: if I’m disconnected from my body, I’m more likely to push too far, not move enough or even get injured. Before I can move outward safely and with confidence, I have to move inward. Emotionally, it’s true, too. If I’m disconnected from how I’m feeling, it’s almost impossible for me to genuinely connect with anyone else.
Today’s Dancing Water Daily is Nourishing Movement anchored in connections within the body and within the patterns of movement. The varied, simple choreography offers opportunities to feel chains of connection in your body and how they move and change. At the end of practice, we use a rolled bath towel to allow connective tissues to breathe and open with gentle passive stretches. Find the video here.

The deeper we connect with ourselves, the easier it is to create true connections with others. This is the heart of the practice we do together.
