Mon, April 27, 2020 ~ Dancing Water Daily ~ Nourishing Movement: Connection in a Time of Disconnection

The two main reasons I started the Dancing Water Daily online classes was to offer both movement and connection in a time when opportunities for both might be limited.

Movement and connection.

The movement part is obvious since I guide movement classes every day but what about the connection part? How do we connect with each other when we are physically so disconnected? Before I teach every day, I intentionally think of our community and conjure up faces to dance with, but the truth is, I feel lonely teaching up there sometimes.

In her great podcast, Unlocking Us, Brene Brown recently had a conversation with former Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy about loneliness and connection. The fascinating interview spoke to our situation in these isolated days when I sometimes feel connected when I’m alone and lonely when I’m on a Zoom call with lots of people. Please do listen to it ~ you can find it here.

Dr. Murthy makes clear that loneliness and connection is not just about the people around us. It starts with each of us. He said “the foundation for connecting with others is a connection with yourself.”

We know this from the practice we do together: if I’m disconnected from my body, I’m more likely to push too far, not move enough or even get injured. Before I can move outward safely and with confidence, I have to move inward. Emotionally, it’s true, too. If I’m disconnected from how I’m feeling, it’s almost impossible for me to genuinely connect with anyone else.

Today’s Dancing Water Daily is Nourishing Movement anchored in connections within the body and within the patterns of movement. The varied, simple choreography offers opportunities to feel chains of connection in your body and how they move and change. At the end of practice, we use a rolled bath towel to allow connective tissues to breathe and open with gentle passive stretches. Find the video here.

“Every one of us, in every part of the world, carries … stories of vulnerability and triumph. The stories are our guidelines for how to adapt in the present. … The more stories we share, the better off we are.” ~ Esther Perel

The deeper we connect with ourselves, the easier it is to create true connections with others. This is the heart of the practice we do together. From there, reach out, leave a comment, forward this video to someone who could use it, send me a message. Please share your story ~ it matters to all of us.

Help me to continue to create Dancing Water Daily practices! No matter how far apart we are physically, we are all connected. The path that we all move along together is held by an Invisible Net of Love that is always there even if we can’t see it. The Dancing Water Daily practices is my thread in that net. Please support my work by offering a donation so I can keep creating these practices for you. With your generous support, I can continue to invest in making these classes available to anyone who can benefit. Please click here to be part of the Dancing Water Daily Net of Love. And please “Send to a Friend” to avoid PayPal fees! Suggested donation: $5 a class or $15 a week ~ and truly, any amount helps enormously.

Shout outs to this week’s generous donors Pam Beard and Marion Robbins! A thousand thanks, friends! Together we can extend this Net of Love to reach everyone who needs it.

AND if, like me, your finances are akimbo, I get it. Another way to help is to share these video practices. Send a link to a friend! Post it on social media! Help spread the word about nourishing movement and moving together apart.
