Thu, April 23, 2020 ~ Dancing Water Daily ~ Dharma Dance: A New Golden Rule

The Golden Rule just doesn’t work. You know the Golden Rule, right? “Do unto others as you’d have others do unto you.” Pure bull hockey.

The Golden Rule is fraught with assumptions and expectations and can often miss the mark. I prefer to follow a New Golden Rule:

Do unto others as, based on deep listening and attention, you truly believe they want to be done unto.

Admittedly, it’s a little clunky.

If I do unto others as I would have others do unto me, I’m assuming that everyone wants the same thing that I do. A simple example comes from teaching group movement classes. If I am in a class and the teacher says something like, “Looks great, Susan!” or “Susan! Rock it!”, I am ALL OVER IT. I love it. I feel great. So when I started teaching, I was calling people’s names and telling them how awesome sauce they were all. the. time. Until a long-time student approached me after class and said, “Please. Please don’t call any attention to me. I hate it. I just want to take class. I hate to be the center of attention.”

In this situation, the Golden Rule absolutely does not work. In fact, it backfires. Instead, I prefer the practice of deeply listening to the body, to myself, and to others to really hear what is needed in the moment. Not what I think I would need or what I think I’m supposed to do in this situation but what’s actually needed right now.

When your body feels tight, you don’t always want the same stretch. When you’re hungry you don’t always want to eat the same thing. When you’re sad, you don’t always want the same kind of support. This is why we need a New Golden Rule. Even if it’s clunky.

Today’s Dancing Water Daily is a Dharma Dance practice with a New Golden Rule. This blend of guided and unguided movement give us the opportunity to break habit and find new ways of moving and listening in for what is needed in the now. Find the video here.

Far too

Help me to continue to create Dancing Water Daily practices! No matter how far apart we are physically, we are all connected. The path that we all move along together is held by an Invisible Net of Love that is always there even if we can’t see it. The Dancing Water Daily practices is my thread in that net. Please support my work by offering a donation so I can keep creating these practices for you. With your generous support, I can continue to invest in making these classes available to anyone who can benefit. Please click here to be part of the Dancing Water Daily Net of Love. And please “Send to a Friend” to avoid PayPal fees! Suggested donation: $5 a class or $15 a week ~ and truly, any amount helps enormously.

Shout outs to this week’s generous anonymous donors and Avril Somlyo, Kristin vonThelen, Susan Perry and Kathie Anzalone! A thousand thanks, friends! Together we can extend this Net of Love to reach everyone who needs it.

AND if, like me, your finances are akimbo, I get it. Another way to help is to share these video practices. Send a link to a friend! Post it on social media! Help spread the word about nourishing movement and moving together apart.
