Mon, April 20, 2020 ~ Dancing Water Daily ~ Nourishing Movement: A Great Need

In a recent talk about leadership in a time of crisis, Leo Babauta (find his blog Zen Habits here, it’s wonderful) said that in all of his work and relationships, he comes at each situation asking “What do they need?”

He told a story about asking his son this question at the beginning of the coronavirus crisis and his son said, “I need reassurance.” So they talked and hugged and while that was heartwarming and everything, it is not my experience.

What I’ve noticed is that most people (myself included) don’t know what they need especially in a time of trauma or crisis. So I wrote to Leo, this man with millions of followers and students and asked him about it…and DANG if he didn’t write me back!

He agreed that most people don’t know what they need and that our practice is to start with ourselves. Keep asking “What do I need?” and responding ~ sometimes getting it right and sometimes not but continuing to ask with true curiosity and responding with true compassion.

After a while, we develop a deeper connection with ourselves and may then have insights into what others might need even if they cannot articulate what it is. Sometimes we’ll offer just what is needed and sometimes not, but if we come from the place of caring and compassionate response, we can only go so wrong.

The practice of mindful movement has deep listening and compassionate curiosity at its core. In today’s Dancing Water Daily Nourishing Movement practice, keep coming back to the questions, “What do I need? What does my body need?” and see what you discover. Find the video here.

And here’s a recent post from Leo Babauta, 4 Mindfulness Practices That We Need Right Now that I found helpful.

The poem from the end of class is A Great Need by Hafez

Of a great need
We are all holding hands
And climbing.
Not loving is a letting go.
The terrain around here
Far too

Help me to continue to create Dancing Water Daily practices! No matter how far apart we are physically, we are all connected. The path that we all move along together is held by an Invisible Net of Love that is always there even if we can’t see it. The Dancing Water Daily practices is my thread in that net. Please support my work by offering a donation so I can keep creating these practices for you. With your generous support, I can continue to invest in making these classes available to anyone who can benefit. Please click here to be part of the Dancing Water Daily Net of Love. And please “Send to a Friend” to avoid PayPal fees! Suggested donation: $5 a class or $15 a week ~ and truly, any amount helps enormously.

Shout outs to this week’s anonymous donors plus Susan Perry, Kristin vonThelen and Kathie Anzalone! A thousand thanks, friends! Together we can extend this Net of Love.

AND if, like me, your finances are akimbo, I get it. Another way to help is to share these video practices. Send a link to a friend! Post it on social media! Help spread the word about nourishing movement and moving together apart.
