Thu, April 16, 2020 ~ Dancing Water Daily ~ Dharma Dance Swirl: Calm is Contagious

In meditation circles, a breath practice called “Square Breath” is often taught as a way of calming monkey mind and letting the nervous system relax. It’s a simple practice of breathing in for four heartbeats, holding the breath at the top for 4 heartbeats, exhaling for 4 beats and holding at the bottom for 4. I’ve done this practice in many a meditation setting sitting on my cushion, wrapped in my prayer shawl with a cup of tea nearby.

It was with some amusement, then, when I learned that in elite military ranks, they use the same kind of breathing when approaching a difficult life-or-death mission. Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, breathe out for 4 and hold for 4. Only in the military arena, they call it “Strategic Breath.”

Just another example of truth being truth no matter what you call it.

Similarly, after listening to Brene Brown’s podcast on calm, it made me laugh to watch part of a talk by a former Navy Seal about the most important thing he learned in Seal training: Calm Is Contagious . The talk was delivered differently than Dr. Brown’s podcast, but the message was the same: however we show up is what spreads. Panic is contagious. Fear is contagious. As the Navy guy says, “Stupid is 100% contagious.” And so is calm.

When we get in touch with the details of what calm feels like in the body, we can allow it to spread. And when we allow more of ourselves to get calm, it spreads like, well, a virus to those around us.

Today’s Dharma Dance Swirl anchors on feeling the sensation of calm in the body and then inviting it to spread inside you and around you. Please find the video here.
