A Thousand Beautiful Things


We went for a walk after the rain yesterday and we these cone flowers. From somewhere in the depths of my meager mathematical memory I said, “Oooh! Fibonacci numbers!”

The Fibonacci Sequence is a series of numbers in which each subsequent number is the sum of the two before it. So like this:

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, …

The ratio (fraction) of any two successive Fibonacci numbers comes very close to The Golden Ratio of 1.61803…

These numbers and ratios show up all the time in Nature, not because Nature understands Fibonacci numbers or the Golden Ratio, but because following those patterns is the most efficient way to grow and enhances that chance that life continues.
