Susan’s Playlists April 13-16, 2015 ~ There is No Try

Master Yoda said it best: “You must unlearn what you have learned. Do or do not. There is no try.”

This week, I invite you to entertain the possibility of eliminating “try” from your vocabulary. Such an endeavor takes practice, mindfulness, openness and courage. Practice since most of us have been trained to use “try” as a way of hedging our bets and softening our statements. Mindfulness since it is a habit for most of us (including me) and is deeply ingrained in our language (“If at first you don’t succeed,…” and “The Ol’ College…” just to name two). Openness since changing our language also changes the energy for both speaker and listener ~ can you be open to sense the difference? And courage since eliminating “try” requires us to say what we mean and recognize our own power.

That’s a lot for a little three-letter word but there you go. I’d love to hear about your “try” experiments!

But now, here are all the playlists from the week. Go to Spotify and follow me at “susanmcculley” and you’ll find my public playlists there, too. I very much want to give you instant access to the music we use in class. I’m experimenting with Spotify with the idea that you can just listen without searching or downloading! Some people are finding that a search on my name turns up my lists, others don’t. (It took me a couple of tries to find one of my yoga teachers.) If you’re having trouble, please let me know. I’d love to figure it out. Please note also that Spotify doesn’t have all the music I have, so sometimes I’ll put up a different version of a song or skip it all together. Please let me know if this is helpful and fun!

Before the playlists, some announce-y type things:

EARTH DAY EARTHSONG ~ WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22 ~ In celebration of Earth Day, I’ll be team teaching Earthsong, a classic Carlos routine, with Mary Linn at 1055am at ACAC Albemarle Square and then she and Anne will celebrate with it again at 545pm Downtown!

PRACTICE YOUR ROAR! Friday, April 24, 6 to 8 p.m., Buck Mountain Episcopal Parish Hall in Earlysville ~ I’ll be teaching a class in recognition of April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. This powerful, energizing class will include songs from One Billion Rising, the biggest mass action in history to end violence against women. We’ll also work with Amy Cuddy’s groundbreaking research about how power stances held for just two minutes can actually change your body and mind, in addition to communicating confidence to people around you. Following the class, will be a self-defense demonstration for women only with an instructor from SARA (Charlottesville’s Sexual Assault Resource Agency). The event is FREE with requests to donations to the BMEC Health and Wellness Committee. Please invite your friends, neighbors, and colleagues to this important and empowering evening.

Nia Extravaganza Weekend ~ FRIDAY, MAY 1 – SUNDAY, MAY 3 ~ Join Nia Faculty Trainers Allison Wright and Vickie Saito for a Nia Extravaganza weekend in Richmond! They’ll offer three public classes and two playshops over the course of the weekend. Click here for more details and to sign up.

CINCO DE MAYO ~ TUESDAY, MAY 5 ~ We had so much fun last year that we’re celebrating again this year! Join Mary Linn and me at 9am at ACAC Downtown AND 535pm at Albemarle Square for a Latin-themed class. Wear your ruffles and sombero!

UNIVERSAL MIND ~ SATURDAY, MAY 9 ~ Kick off your Mother’s Day weekend with Anne and me! We’ll be team teaching a beautiful classic Carlos routine, Universal Mind. Join us at 9am at ACAC Downtown AND 1230 at Albemarle Square.

As always, please let me know if you have questions or how I can help more.

Dance on. Shine on.
