In Sanskrit, it’s called Ujjayi.
It’s also known as “Victorious Breath” and “Ocean Breath.”
I call it “The Breath That Is Just Loud Enough to Scoot Thoughts Out of My Head Hooray and Namaste.”
It’s kind of a long name, I grant you, but it works for me.
My yoga teachers say, “Make your breath louder than your thoughts.” That works, too.
When I’m sitting on my cushion and I’m itching to get to my To Do list or excited about walking in the snow or worried about how everything is going to turn out, I turn on “The Breath That Is Just Loud Enough to Scoot Thoughts Out of My Head Hooray and Namaste.” It slips into the crannies where my thoughts think and gently, kindly shoos them out. Or at least it confuses them enough so they stop their swirling for a few seconds.
Sometimes, that’s all the space I need to go back to a silent breath. Sometimes, it’s TBTIJLETSTOOMHHAN the whole time. Either way, I’m grateful to have Ujjayi in my back pocket.
