100 Words: “Heal” Lead

barefoot walkingI’ve taught Nia for years.  Almost 2500 classes!  I say “Heel Lead” all the time.  What does it mean?

Heel Lead How To:  Step forward, side or at an angle so heel touches first (big calcaneous bone designed for it!).  Roll:  heel, ball, toes.  Simple movement, big awareness.

Physically, all leg joints align, body relaxes.  Mentally, awareness and concentration increase. Emotionally, heel lead is confident and courageous.  (Toe lead feels tentative and hesitant … and leads to blisters below the big toe).

Lead with the heel and lead with the heal.  How does it feel?  Do tell!
